TOP 64 IN APRIL'S DRAFT part II

Today: #33 to #48  Monday: #17 to #32

33. Jamon Meredith---G-T---6' 4 5/8"--304---South Carolina
Meredith played the bulk of his time at tackle, but could play inside at guard. He's both quick & fast (5.03 in the 40) for an offensive lineman. He has good technique & although he put up 31 reps of 225 lbs at the combine, his game isn't based on brute strength. His lateral movement is exceptional, especially for a guard, he can hit a moving target in the run game & could even project to left tackle.

34. Jarron Gilbert---DT/DE---6' 5 1/4"--288---San Jose State
Gilbert is exceptionally athletic for a big man. He ran 4.82 at the combine, had a vertical jump of 35 1/2", a standing broad jump of 9' 11" & put up 28 reps in the bench press. If you've ever seen his YouTube video you'll know he's an athlete. In the video he jumps out of a 3' deep swimming pool and lands on his feet on the pool deck without ever using his hands. So how does all this athleticism translate onto the football field? He played DT for the Spartans and he can play a five technique DE in a 3-4 defense. He uses his vertical jump and long arms to bat down passes, his speed allows him to get to the sideline and his motor doesn't stop.

35. Donald Brown---RB---5' 10 1/4"--210---Connecticut
This junior is a terrific all around back, Brown is quick, durable athletic & very productive (over 2,000 yards in '08). He catches the ball well out of the backfield, though not blessed with blazing speed (4.51), he has good vision to see the cutback lane and he plants his foot & is gone. His 41 1/2" vertical jump and 10' 5" broad jump showcase his explosive legs.  Real decent kid with good character & intelligence.

36. Eben Britton---OT---6' 6"--309---Arizona
A junior would probably would be a high 1st round pick had he stayed in school. But Britton has a solid package to bring to the next level. Body is chiseled, his feet are quick enough, he's strong enough (24 reps), fast enough (5.16) & he's very intelligent. Comes from a highly educated, Ivy-League family. Other than his smarts, he doesn't really excel in one area, but there aren't any black marks either. Very disciplined in that he seldom gets flagged & always seems to be in the right position. Very workmanlike.

37. Larry English---DE/OLB---6' 2 1/8"--255---Northern Illinois
Another DE/OLB tweener who will excel in the right scheme. He has both speed (4.77) & quickness. His 31 sacks over the last 2 seasons speak of his ability to turn the corner and close on the QB. Strong enough (24 reps), the only questions I have are his ability to change directions at LB, his combine agility drills weren't as quick as you'd like to see.

38. Max Unger---C/G---6' 4 3/8"--309---Oregon
This is a smart, tough & versatile lineman. He could even play RT in a pinch. Solid punch in pass protection although he could use additional upper body strength (22 reps). Pulls well & can hit a moving target. Team leader with great character.

39. Sean Smith---CB---6' 2 3/4"--210---Utah
Another Ute underclassman who decided to come out after their big win vs Alabama. Big, huge for a corner, fast athlete (4.48) with long arms & decent ball skills. I think he's best suited in a cover-2 scheme, he's able to jam a receiver at the line & is a decent tackler. He doesn't show as well when he has to flip his hips & run with a receiver deep. His straight-line speed usually allowed him to close in college, but at the next level, I have my doubts about Smith as a shutdown corner.

40. Connor Barwin---DE/OLB---6' 3 5/8"--256---Cincinnati
Super versatile athlete, he's played TE, OLB & DE for the Bearcats. These position switches weren't for injuries, he actually started at all three positions and excelled. He's fast (4.66) & his 40 1/2" vertical, 10' 8" broad jump & his 21 reps showcase his athletic ability. I like him as a 4-3 weakside DE or an outside linebacker(either side) in a 3-4. I really like this kid.

41. Kenny Britt---WR---6' 2 7/8"--218---Rutgers
Junior. Big, productive wideout who is fast enough (4.51) to get deep, strong enough (23 reps) to beat a jam & the vertical (37") to be a threat in the redzone. Catches the ball with his hands most of the time & shields the defenders with his big body. Is a little full of himself & he will get lazy running complete routes. Very talented and productive, but work ethic is a question.

42. Darius Butler---CB---5' 10"--182---Connecticut
Only his size will keep Butler out of the 1st round. Runs 4.45, vertical jumped 43" & his broad jump was 11' 1". His transition from backpeddle his almost perfect, he flips his hips without hesitation. His vertical allows him to defend larger receiver & he appears to be fearless.

43. Jared Cook---TE---6' 4 3/4"--246---South Carolina
Made a big move up the board during the postseason & the combine where he ran 4.50, a scary time for a tight end. His 23 reps on the bench were sufficient & his 41" vertical wowed everyone. Oh yeah, he catches the ball well & his 15.6 average will tell you he's a threat after the catch. It's unusual for a TE to run that fast, but after watching him play 6 times in '08, I can tell you he plays as fast as he times. Not much of a blocker but he has the frame to put on 6-8 more lbs without sacrificing the speed.

44. Michael Johnson---DE---6' 6 7/8"--266---Georgia Tech
The late Joel Buschsbaum, the guy who did this before Mel Kiper, used to say "he looks like Tarzan but plays like Jane". This is Michael Johnson in a nutshell. He has the chiseled body, the ridiculous measurables (4.66 40, 38 1/2" vert. 10' 8" bj & 28 reps on the bench) & some games where he was absolutely unblockable. Now for reality, he was invisible in other contests, a total non-factor all afternoon long. I wonder how much playing football really means to Johnson and how much sacrifice he's willing to put forth in the NFL. Total boom or bust prospect.

45. Patrick Chung---S---5' 11"--212---Oregon
Really came on as a senior, made a bunch of plays, made himself a better football player. He clocked in at 4.5 & his other measurables were OK, but not exceptional. He was able to pump 25 reps on the bench though. He is however an instinctive football player with good range and a sure tackler.

46. Josh Freeman---QB---6' 5 3/4"--248---Kansas State
Huge upside here but reaching it may take 2-3 years. He should've stayed in school for his senior year and developed more. His mechanics are very inconsistent, his footwork is sloppy and his reads need to be quicker. That said, he's a smart kid who, with the right coaching could turn into a franchise quarterback. Big arm and almost perfect size for the position. Not a big threat to run but tough to stop in QB sneaks.

47. Evander "Ziggy" Hood---DT---6' 2 7/8"--300---Missouri
Staying in school for his senior year worked out just as it's supposed to. He refined his game, got more experience, played in the Senior Bowl and elevated his draft status from a 2nd day prospect to the 2nd round. Quick, ran 4.89 and put up 34 reps on the bench. Pretty decent pass rusher for a DT, has a nice spin move. Holds his ground well in the run game. Very durable with a good motor.

48. Louis Delmas---S---5' 11 3/8"--204---Western Michigan
Strictly a free safety, true centerfielder type, with good range & anticipation. Only saw him 3 times plus the combine, but he jumped off the screen each time. Very athletic and a decent tackler for his size. Better football player than an athlete.
