JAY CUTLER/DENVER BRONCOS UPDATE
This ever evolving soap opera that has Denver fans squirming has taken a new turn. Starting quarterback, Jay Cutler, thru his agent, Bus Cook, has formally asked to be traded. A Saturday morning face-to-face meant to mend fences apparently inflamed the situation. Sadly, it has been reported that agent Cook is one driving this controversy. Whether he wants Cutler traded & that team would have to write a new contract for Cutler or if he stays, he'll want a new contract to soothe his damaged ego. Either way, it looks like Cook might be the bad guy here. Cutler won't meet with coach Josh McDaniel without Cook being present.
The relationship between a starting QB & his head coach has got be very close, a lot of trust involved. I think McDaniel betrayed that trust when he lied to Cutler about his desire to acquire Patriot QB Matt Cassel. Cutler then overreacted, started pouting, put both his home as well as his parent's Denver home on the market & started talking to the team thru the media. Both sides are at fault in my opinion & I don't see an easy out for either side. Even owner Pat Bowlen, speaking to a reporter after a charity appearance Saturday night, said "it looks like we're going to lose our star quarterback".
The Broncos are between a rock & a hard place right now. If they wait, hoping things cool down, the closer it gets to the draft, the less Cutler is worth in a trade. I think they'll take a wait & see attitude, but I doubt they will wait more than 10 days. There will be plenty of suitors to field offers from, possibly up to 8 teams. I question just how patient their fans will be if another rookie QB has to be brought in, but it may be necessary for McDaniel to get a QB he can feel comfortable working with.
