COLLEGE NOTES
Kansas coach Mark Mangino suspended two starting players indefinitely on Friday. Wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe & DT Jamal Greene Jr. will not return to the team at least until spring practice ends. Briscoe, a 2nd team all Big-12 receiver, had 92 receptions for 1,407 yards & 15 touchdowns. They were suspended for "violations of unspecified team rules", the catch-all for college sports.
South Carolina DT, Ladi Ajiboye, a 2-year starter, was suspended indefinitely by Steve Spurrier, Gamecock head coach. He was arrested for possession of marijuana.
Speaking of such things, there are rumors circulating about 2 recent NFL Combine invitees not passing their urine test for drugs or steroids. The rumors claim the two are of the 1st round pick variety. I hope this is only a rumor, the date of this event is known a year in advance & players capable of being first round picks know they'll be invited to attend & that they must submit to a urine test. If it's true, you have either the dumbest prospects in '09 or you have 2 guys with a severe problem.
Michigan starting QB, Nick Sheridan, suffered a broken leg at spring practice & will miss 4-6 weeks. Sheridan is the only QB currently at Michigan with any game experience. Steven Threet, a 7-game starter for the Wolverines last season, just transferred last month & the remaining QB's are incoming freshmen. After a 3-9 season last year, 2nd year coach, Rich Rodriguez is already starting the '09 season behind the eight ball.
Bailouts, stimulus packages, Tarp Funds, a staggering national debt, man, congress & President Obama certainly are busy fixing our country. Well add one more item to their agenda & it certainly ranks right up there with all the other ills we must address. Utah Senator Orrin Hatch has decided he's had enough with the BCS & wants the senate to open hearings on the NCAA & their handling of the mythical national championship. I personally agree with Sen. Hatch, but with everything that's going on, maybe it should wait. Texas Representative, Joe Barton, will introduce a bill next week that will prevent the NCAA from calling any football game the 'National Championship Game' unless the game culminates from a playoff system. I actually like that one as a first step.
