THIS AND THAT..........THURSDAY

Let's handle the police blotter news first.  New York Giant receiver & resident pinhead, Plaxico Burress, has made it clear he doesn't want to do any jail time. And why should he? He's Plaxico Burress after all. This type of arrogance is precisely why he's in the trouble he's in right now. Laws forbidding the carrying of an unregistered handgun, discharging a firearm in a public place & lying to police apparently apply to all New Yorkers except Mr. Burress so it just makes sense that these misguided authorities shouldn't expect him to spend anytime behind bars, right?  Hey, I don't want to go to jail either but at some point if I continue flaunting the law, I'm realistic enough to understand there are consequences that might include incarceration for my dumb ass. One more thing regarding this genius, his wife's occupation is practicing law, yes sir, she's an attorney.

Donte Stallworth, Cleveland Brown wide receiver, is to be charged with vehicular manslaughter in the death of Mario Reyes, struck & killed by Stallworth's car 11 days ago in Miami. Stallworth tested over the legal limit for DUI after hitting the 49-year old crane operator. A very sad story for everyone involved.

Dallas police officer, Robert Powell, resigned from the force Wednesday. Powell is the officer who's way over the top behavior with Houston Texan RB, Ryan Moats & his wife, Tamisha drew national attention. The Moats' were attempting to get to the hospital before Tamisha's mother died. Powell detained them after they rolled thru a stoplight with their emergency flashers on. He drew his gun in the hospital entrance & pointed it at Mrs. Moats. He ignored their pleas regarding her mother, threatening to take them both to jail & detained them for 13 minutes. By the time they arrived bedside, the woman had died. The entire episode was caught on the police car's dash cam. I think Powell resigned before he was fired, after watching the video, I think he deserved to be kicked off the force, waving a gun around & threatening a traffic offender in the manner Powell did was disgraceful. The Moats accepted Powell's apology.

I'm beginning to see why the Minnesota Vikings abruptly dropped out of trade talks for Jay Cutler in February. Cutler now claims no one tried to call or text him from the Bronco organization. He's in shock the Bronco's want to trade him & he never wanted to be traded, he loves Denver & loves his teammates. The Broncos have stated they have phone records proving they tried communicating with Cutler repeatedly. Why even respond? You begin to look petty & all this 'he said, they said' may actually hurt his trade value.

I'm confused about Detroit's #1 draft pick dilemma. If they don't get involved in the Jay Cutler fire sale, they will have the #1 overall pick, plus the 20th pick in the 1st round & the top pick, #33 overall, in the second round. According to the Detroit media, the Lions are supposedly debating between Georgia QB, Mathew Stafford & Baylor OT, Jason Smith. They need huge upgrades at both positions but there are only 3 quarterbacks who will be drafted anywhere near the first round, pick one of them very early or wait until next year. Granted all 3 are juniors & the history of junior quarterbacks in their first 2 years isn't great. But taking Smith #1 overall doesn't make sense to me either as there are a number of good to great tackle prospects in this draft. Another consideration is how does Smith stack up against other tackles in this draft, is he that much better & how does he compare to last season's record 8 offensive tackles picked in round one. I actually believe he's decidedly better than Eugene Monroe & has a much lower 'bust risk' than Andre Smith. As good as he is, I don't rate him as high as the first 2 tackles taken last year, Jake Long & Ryan Clady. And certainly not as high as Joe Thomas, taken in '07. If they can sign Stafford or Mark Sanchez, if they rate him higher, they should draft a QB #1 overall & grab a tackle with the 20th pick. Franchise QB's are tougher to obtain than tackles.

The Chiefs' running back, Larry Johnson, had expressed his desire to be released so he could flee Kansas City & his repeated legal issues. Plus he didn't like the direction the team was heading. Well now he's softened his stance & would like to stay. He'll stay if the Chiefs want him to stay. They are trying to recoup some signing bonus money in lieu of his legal trouble. His post season whine may have pushed Chiefs' management over the edge. I believe he's got plenty left in the tank & if he can be retained, he should be, the depth at RB is dismal.

Chiefs' fans who want to be the first one on their block to get a Matt Cassel jersey, your wait is over. Cassel has settled on #7, as #16, his former number with the Pats, belonged to HOFer Len Dawson & was  long ago retired.

Is J'Nathan Bullock looking to follow in the footsteps of Tony Gonzalez & Antonio Gates? Bullock, a 6' 5" 245-pound power forward from Cleveland State is getting some interest from pro scouts. He was an honorable mention all-state player from Michigan but hasn't played football since. Gonzalez excelled in both sports at Cal & was a first round draft pick. Gates played only basketball at Eastern Michigan & Kent State before signing with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent. Obviously, with the success of Gonzalez & Gates, together they have 1,316 receptions & 127 touchdowns, he's drawing a lot of attention. We'll keep you posted as to his workout numbers.
