THIS AND THAT..........THURSDAY
Last week after Jay Cutler was traded to the Bears, I said the Bears should do whatever it took to sign ex-Rams, OT Orlando Pace & WR Torry Holt. Well, within an hour of writing this, the Bears did in fact sign Pace. Today speaking to some Chicago media, Pace said he had talked to Holt & had encouraged him to sign with the Bears. Orlando said he wanted the Bears to give Holt a call in hopes of getting him to Chicago. This evening quarterback Jay Cutler said in a radio interview that he had 'reached out' to ex-Giant Plaxico Burress in hopes of getting him to Chicago. I think this speaks volumes about Cutler's immaturity. How could any QB prefer Burress over Holt? Yes, Holt is 14 months older but he's never been in trouble off the field, he has 869 career receptions & 74 touchdowns. Burress has a litany of off-field trouble, has missed a lot of time to injury & his career stats of 505 catches with 55 TD's really don't compare. Plus, Burress' gun charges haven't been dismissed, they've only been delayed, he will most likely have to do some prison time.
Continuing with the police blotter, Buffalo running back Marshawn Lynch has been suspended by NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, for the first three games of this coming season. He was arrested in California for having an unregistered handgun in his car found during a traffic stop. Lynch as been very remorseful from day one & I hope he's learned his lesson.
I've railed about the Cincinnati Bengals & the off-field troubles many of their players have experienced in the last 3-4 years. I wondered in my "Team by Team Needs for April's Draft" piece about the Bengals, just how long owner Mike Brown is going to go with Marvin Lewis. Wednesday brought about two more incidences regarding just what I'm talking about. Cornerback Leon Hall was charged with DUI & Cincinnati signed Tank Johnson. Yes, that Tank Johnson, the twice suspended, twice cut defensive tackle. He was arrested in 2006 for having numerous unregistered handguns, assault rifles & thousands of rounds of ammunition. He did a 120-days in jail, cut by the Bears & served an 8-game suspension. Now Hall has never had any scrapes with the law & deserves a second chance, but at what point do the Bengals take down the 'Help Wanted' sign when guys like Johnson come calling?
Reinforcing my comments regarding the Chiefs' desire to trade down, they have brought in 2 more prospects that aren't rated high enough for Kansas City's 3rd overall pick in the first round but neither will last until their next pick at #67. Rey Maualuga, USC inside linebacker & Northern Illinois outside linebacker, Larry English are both having private workouts with the Chiefs this week. The opportunity to trade down may not come, but it looks as though they'll be ready if it does.
Chris 'Beanie' Wells, Ohio State running back, was apparently a no-show for his personal interview & workout in Denver Wednesday. It was reported Wells missed his flight, but neither Wells, his agent or the Broncos were the source of the missed flight story. It is not known if Denver wants to reschedule Wells before draft, April 25th.
