MOCK DRAFTS? WE DON'T NEED NO STINKING MOCK DRAFTS
After looking at hundreds of mock drafts over the last 25 years, I still don't understand the purpose of them. Of the 32 picks in the first round, it's not unusual for them to have just 5 or 6 picks that are correct. I looked around the internet tonight & found quite a few mock drafts. What amazed me was just how wildly different some are. The other thing that truly shocked me was how way off some of the more well known sites are regarding their rankings of prospects & their mock drafts.
The Sporting News website listed Missouri wide receiver, Jeremy Maclin, as a 2nd round pick. If Maclin lasts longer than pick 20, it will be the biggest news of draft day. They also have LSU DE Tyson Jackson. Penn State OLB Aaron Maybin & North Carolina WR Hakeem Nicks all mid-to-late 2nd round picks. Uh, I don't think so, Jackson, Maybin & Maclin will go in the top 15 picks of round one & Nicks will sneak into the bottom of the first round.
CBS Sports has a guy named Pete Prisco, one of their main writers & he wrote a piece today about the Chiefs' needs. Apparently he is on the same page as Herm Edwards, he thinks McIntosh is fine for now, Niswanger "has his best football ahead of him", maybe, but not at center. Tank Tyler is "solid next to Dorsey", Larry Johnson "is fine for now, but Jamaal Charles will eventually become the starter at RB". Oh yeah, "Matt Cassel could be a one year wonder & in that case they'll go back to Thigpen". Well I guess that one is possible. It would have been nice if the guy had actually seen the Chiefs play last year, his analysis was as lame as I saw anywhere on the web.
College Football News, which is part of FOXSports & was probably the worst of all. I'll list 10 prospects & where CFN has them rated, next to that number in parenthesis, I'll put where I have them rated. We'll see who does better come April 25th.
Mark Sanchez---QB---USC-------20th (7)
Michael Johnson-DE---Ga Tech---22nd (52nd)
Fili Moala--------DT---USC------24th (62nd)
Michael Crabtree-WR---Tx Tech--26th (3rd)
Jasper Brinkley---LB---S. Carolina-29th (108th)
Scott McKillop---LB----Pitt-------30th (138th)
Tyson Jackson---DE---LSU-------41st (12th)
Robert Ayers-----DE---Tenn------67th (19th)
Kenny Britt------WR---Rutgers----70th (24th)
Ian Johnson-----RB----Boise St.---80th (265th)
Quite a disparity there huh? Keep an eye on this one.
NFL.com has 4 different guys doing mock drafts, Jamie Dukes did this one in which he left USC MLB Rey Maualuga & Ohio State MLB James Laurinaitis out of the first round. Maualuga will be picked in the 1st round guaranteed & Laurinaitis has a chance.
Actually the guys who did best were the ones at FOXSports.com & Pro Football Weekly. Mel Kiper Jr. is, as usual, pretty close as well. I may have to throw one on here soon so you'll have something to complain/argue/laugh about.
