THIS AND THAT.........FRIDAY
As a long suffering Chiefs' fan, I was feeling pretty chipper after I read that the Philadelphia Eagles had brought offensive tackles Eugene Monroe & Jason Smith in for private workouts Wednesday & Thursday. The only way the Eagles could select either of these guys in next Saturday's draft would be to trade up into the top 3 or 4 picks. Seattle, who picks 4th wants a tackle or possibly USC QB Mark Sanchez. If Detroit takes QB Matthew Stafford & St. Louis takes either Monroe or J. Smith, it would put Kansas City in a great spot. The teams wanting Sanchez or the remaining stud tackle, they'd have to deal with Kansas City if they were to be assured of getting their man.
After working out both tackles & knowing they'd have to give up both of their 1st round picks to Kansas City, the Eagles traded one of the first rounders (#28), a 4th round pick (#121) & an undisclosed late round pick in 2010 for Buffalo Bill, Jason Peters. The Eagles got a 2-time Pro Bowl left tackle but had to give him a new contract. He wasn't as good last season as he'd been earlier in his career. The 6-4 330 pound former Arkansas Razorback will move right into the left tackle spot left by Tra Thomas' free agent defection.
So K.C. can scratch the Eagles off of the possible trading partners list, don't give up hope quite yet. Washington owner Daniel Snider is apparently smitten with Mark Sanchez. He brought Mark back to Washington for a second visit tonight. I believe he would like to do whatever it takes to get into position to draft Sanchez. Problem is, 'the Daniel' doesn't have enough ammo in this years' draft to make this trade. The 'Skins have the 13th pick in the 1st round, the 16th pick in the 3rd round, #80 overall & then the 14th selection in round 5, #150 overall. Nowhere near enough. A deal with them would have to include another pick in 2010. Adding a player really doesn't get me too excited, they have a group of older players with injury issues. This would be a possibility though & Mr Snider has a history of over paying for talent he's excited about.
The Carolina Panthers say they have no intention of trading DE Julius Peppers to New England, Kansas City or anybody else for that matter. Even tho Peppers hasn't signed his franchise tag tender & he claims he's not going to, general manager, Marty Hurney, believes Peppers will sign it before training camp & won't hold out. Julius has monster cap space at $16.7 million & next year this number grows another 20%. Regardless of the brave face Hurney is showing in public, I think they'll move Peppers. Now whether they do it before the draft is yet to be seen, but if they wait until afterwords, they'll get nothing for a 4-time Pro Bowl defender until next year's draft.
Speaking of next Saturday's draft, I think we're going to witness something I can't remember ever seeing. I can't foresee any way a player from Miami, Michigan or Notre Dame will be selected on the first day of the draft. Shows just how far these former football factories have fallen. Equally surprising, it's very conceivable neither Washington or Colorado will have a player drafted at all. Wow. It is a lead pipe cinch Baylor tackle, Jason Smith will be drafted in the first round, most likely in the top-3. Anybody know the last Baylor Bear picked in round one? It was 13 years ago, the Miami Dolphins picked Baylor DT Daryl Gardener with the 20th overall pick. He had a very forgettable 8-year career with Miami, Washington, Denver & Cincinnati.
