DRAFT WEEK THIS AND THAT..........TUESDAY

Denver Broncos' head coach, Josh McDaniels, recently said "the key to the Cutler trade was getting Kyle Orton from the Bears, he's our guy". Oh really? Tomorrow McDaniels will fly to sunny Southern California for a hastily arranged private workout with USC QB Mark Sanchez. So it appears Denver is back in the Sanchez sweepstakes.  This group of Sanchez drafting wannabes is growing daily. Denver has rejoined Seattle, San Francisco, Washington, the Jets, Tampa Bay, Minnesota & Cleveland. Cleveland???

Several media members, both national & local Cleveland guys, were reporting Monday evening the Browns are dangling QB Brady Quinn in hopes that one of the teams that really don't have much of a chance at Sanchez, might want Quinn as a consolation prize. This might include the Jets or Minnesota.  WR Braylon Edwards is still expected to go east to the Giants for their first round pick. It's possible the Browns could end up with 3 first round picks before Friday. Apparently new coach Eric Mangini isn't all that enamored with Brady. I hope Cleveland fans are patient, the Mangenius has moved a lot of talent out of Cleveland since he arrived.

How's this for a perfect match?  Chad Ocho-Cinco to the Raiders for a 2nd round pick, a true nut-job playing in nut-job central? Bengal owner, Mike Brown, totally missed the boat mid-season in '08, when he was offered 2 first round picks for #85 by the Redskins, famous for overpaying for just about everything.  If this trade crosses his desk, Brown better pull the trigger or prepare for more whining & goofball antics. The Raiders were planning on drafting Michael Crabtree or Jeremy Maclin. They desperately need a defensive tackle as well. If they could acquire Ocho-Cinco for a 2nd, they could use their first rounder for DT B.J. Raji.

Seven-time All Pro, Torry Holt, has signed a 3-year deal with the wide receiver depleted Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jags beat out Chicago & Tennessee for his services.  After the pathetic mess that the Jacksonville receiving corp had become, Holt, a total pro, is a very welcome addition. I still think they will select another wideout fairly early on day 2 of the draft.

LSU WR Demetrius Byrd is currently in the ICU of a Miami hospital after a Sunday morning traffic accident. Byrd was on his way to pick up his mother for church when the accident occurred. He's in stable condition & doctors say they expect him to have a full recovery. Byrd, a third round prospect in my ratings, will now plummet on draftboards all over the league. It will be hard to rank his draft status with very limited medical information. He might fall into the seventh round or even off boards altogether.  It's very sad anytime something like this happens, but here's a young man who has been a solid citizen his entire life & worked tirelessly to make himself into a fine student, player & teammate & one week from the payoff it all goes so wrong.  Here's hoping Byrd makes a full & speedy recovery.

As good as Virginia tackle Eugene Monroe is, he isn't even on 3-5 NFL draftboards. He was removed after several team doctors concluded his knees could become a major issue within 5 years. I like Monroe as a left tackle, his pass blocking techniques are superior, but not so much on the right side. He just isn't as strong as many teams prefer & he might be too even tempered to play right tackle, just not mean or nasty enough. With questions about his knees, his ability to gain weight & grow into his frame would have to be examined closely as well.

I've been chirping for 2 months(look in the archives) about the Chiefs' being in the right spot at #3 overall come draft day.  Believing QB Mark Sanchez, WR Michael Crabtree or one of the top OT's could entice one or more teams to get into a bidding war for Kansas City's pick, I'm now hearing others who believe much of the same.  Sports Illustrated's Peter King said today in his column he's heading to Kansas City on Thursday & plans to be there all weekend. He thinks the Chiefs & Scott Pioli will shape whatever happens on day one of the draft. Because of his reputation, King calls Pioli one of the most imortant people involved with this draft. The new K.C. GM, known for making many draft day trades, has also made it clear, he's open to trading out of the #3 spot. He's put his line in the water, let's see if he gets a bite. ESPN had an article Monday night about all the speculation regarding Kansas City's first pick & a multitude of trade possibilities. It will be interesting to see if ESPN & The NFL Network also send correspondents to K.C.
