DRAFT WEEK THIS AND THAT..........WEDNESDAY
The NFL released results from the combine late yesterday, Wonderlic test scores & unfortunately, a few drug test failures. Florida wide receiver Percy Harvin, considered to be a 1st round draft pick, tested positive for pot. So did North Carolina WR Brandon Tate. Tate missed half the season with MCL & ACL tears. He had mostly been just a return man for the Tar Heels until his senior season. He was starting to show a knack for the receiver position when he was injured. He wasn't even on some draftboards because of the knee surgery that is expected to take a full year to rehab. I'm guessing he's on fewer tonight. Harvin, who has been sidelined quite a bit from nagging injuries the past 2 seasons, had already slipped in the ratings of more than a few teams & after this episode, he might have cost himself a couple of million dollars falling 6-10 spots. As far as the Wonderlic results, the highest score was a 40 by Penn State center, A.Q. Shipley & the lowest, 9 by Oregon RB, Jeremiah Johnson. My guy Percy Harvin? Well all that pot smokin' didn't hurt his test score, he answered 42 of the 50 questions & got 12 of them right. WooHoo!
Tonight I saw Cincinnati head coach, Marvin Lewis & he appeared to make it very clear, "we're not trading Chad", referring to Ocho-Cinco. I believed him. Chad might as well stop whining, it looks like he's staying in Cincy.
That Pete Prisco over at CBS Sports continues to stick his neck out doesn't he? His new column "Sleeper Central-The Better Than Team". Meaning guys who are better than their draft ratings. He named Clint Sintim, Fili Moala, Lawrence Sidbury, Phil Loadholt, Brian Robiskie, Sean Smith & Mike Thomas. Sleepers? Hardly, these guys will all be drafted in the 2nd & 3rd rounds. Second round draft picks are sleepers? They're 2nd round picks, how much better are they gonna be? With the exception of Sidbury, all of these guys have been starters in major programs like Virginia, USC, Oklahoma, Ohio State etc. etc. Here's a flash Mr. Prisco, a 'draft sleeper' is a kid from Stillman or Liberty, guys from other countries who have only been here long enough to go to college, 5th, 6th & 7th rounders. Here's a few of mine:
Saw these first two when I was originally looking at another guy, they both jumped off the screen.
Sebastian Vollmer---OT---Houston (Born & raised in Germany, came to USA as a college freshman)
Phillip Hunt---------OLB---Houston (started 40 straight, 34.5 sacks, 43 tackles for loss)
Roger Allen---------OG----Missouri Western St. (saw him in an all-star game, dominated till hurt)
Sammie Lee Hill-----DT----Stillman (same story as Allen)
Taurus Johnson----WR----South Florida (spotted this kid in the KU game, he can motor)
Frantz Joseph-----OLB----Florida Atlantic (made a bunch of plays in the 2 games I saw)
Let's see if these guys are drafted & if they make an NFL roster. I can promise you, none of them are 2nd rounders.
