DRAFT WEEK THIS AND THAT...........THURSDAY Part II

The Tennessee Titans have entered into trade talks with the Arizona Cardinals for the services of disgruntled wide receiver, Anquan Boldin. The Baltimore Ravens had broken off talks since the asking price was a first & a third round draft pick. The Ravens don't have but 6 picks & didn't want to part with a third of them. The Titans, on the other hand, have 10 picks, so they have more of a cushion. The Titans had already signed ex-Steeler Nate Washington to add some much needed speed to the receiving corp, but Washington has never started, so he doesn't have a lot of experience. Boldin certainly does & if the Titans can acquire him, a prior weakness would become a strength with Justin Gage, Washington, Boldin & TE Bo Scaife.

Does anyone remember this rant by Chiefs' tight end Tony Gonzalez last October, right before the NFL trading deadline? "Nobody is going to trade a 2nd round draft choice for a 32-year old tight end" he was quoted as saying by the Kansas City Star. Tony was obviously angry ex-GM Carl Peterson hadn't traded him to the Philadelphia Eagles for a 3rd round pick, Peterson said "we're not going to give him away & a 3rd round pick is just that".  On February 27th, Gonzalez turned 33 & yes, today the Chiefs received a 2010 2nd round pick for him in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons. I think this trade might have come more from owner Clark Hunt than Scott Pioli. As ESPN's Michael Smith, who covered Pioli & the Pats for The Boston Globe, said "with Pioli, it's always about business". It might have been a partial thank you from Hunt for 12 years of superior play & class behavior.  So long Tony, good luck, maybe we'll see you at Arrowhead in 2012 when the Chiefs play the Falcons. If not we'll look forward to your induction into the Chiefs Hall of Fame & later, the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

I wish Saturday afternoon would get here already, I've gone back & forth on what the Chiefs are going to do or what they'll have to do. Earlier today I began to believe they were going to be stuck at #3 overall, but as the evening wore on, I was flip flopping back to the trade-down scenario. I think the most feasible trading partners could be the Jets or Redskins. I've gone back to the thought that Daniel Snider, Redskins' owner, has a man-crush on QB Mark Sanchez & he may be willing to get into a pissing contest with anyone who also covets the Trojan quarterback. With either, I think the Chiefs will have to take some of the payment in 2010 draft picks as neither have enough ammunition to get all the way up to third with what they have for Saturday's fandango.

I talked about the Michael Crabtree "Diva Tour" earlier today & as we approach the 10 o'clock hour, more bad buzz concerning Mr. Crabtree keeps trickling in. During a live online chat at NFL.com, Crabtree was asked about being called cocky & how he would like playing for the Raiders.  He responded "I'm not cocky at all, people gonna talk man, but it's simple, I'm a cool guy. As for playing for the Raiders.....uh....I got no comment". I really like this kid, plays hard & he can take over a game, but if there's a chink in his armor, it may not have anything to do with his 40-yard dash time, it will be about his ego. According to Mike Florio of PFT, the snarky quote about the Raiders has been omitted from the chat transcripts by NFL.com. I looked, it was gone. Hmmmmmm.

The trade talks between the Browns & Giants regarding Braylon Edwards have reached an impasse according to ESPN. The Browns want the Giant's 1st round pick & DE Mathias Kiwanuka. Pretty unrealistic, I love Braylon, but he led the league in dropped passes, he went from 16 TD's in '07 to 3 in '08. They're not exactly dealing from strength, besides, Kiwanuka is a valuable part of the Giant defensive rotation.

I got my brain picked this afternoon by KRMS sports director, Rance Berger. He wanted to discuss what rounds I thought Mizzou players would go in & what to expect from the Chiefs. We agreed it would be torture to see Jeremy Maclin in a Raider uniform, hopefully that won't happen. Rance knows his football & it was an enjoyable 45-minute conversation. I look forward to doing a draft review with him next week.

Tomorrow will bring a couple of updates & Chiefs' fans will get their final draft analysis.
