THIS AND THAT.........THE ANNIVERSARY EDITION
I hate to even get started down this road, but...............there is considerable chatter that ole #4 might be playing this season back in his old division. Yes, I'm talking about Brett Favre. The whispers started the other day when a chartered corporate jet landed at the Hattiesburg, Mississippi airport. This airport doesn't get this kind of traffic & it stuck out like a sore thumb, getting people interested. The plan was there for 5 hours, then departed for Minneapolis, according to the required flight plan that was filed. That same day the Jets officially released Favre, making him an unrestricted free agent. Yesterday, former teammate Darren Sharper, now a member of the New Orleans Saints, said he was pretty sure Favre was going to play again, for the Vikings. Minnesota Owner, Ziggy Wilf, stated back in February that his club had no interest in Favre. Today, Minnesota head coach, Brad Childress, admitted they were going to discuss the possibility of talking to Favre. Discuss? Possibility? With all the other pieces in this puzzle, I think the jet trip that started this discussion might have tipped the Vikes' hand.
Another subject I don't like talking about, Michael Vick, will soon be moved to the front burner. He's fast approaching his release from prison & will be looking for reinstatement in the NFL. PETA, yet another sore subject with me(I'm beginning to actually sound like a crabby old man I am not), had tried for months to work out a deal with Vick. They wanted to use him in TV ads denouncing the abhorrent "sport" of dog fighting. It looked as tho a deal was near when today, PETA people said there would be no deal & any team that tries to sign him will face their full wrath. They wanted him to take a psychological exam to make sure he was completely contrite & would be so in the TV ads. Apparently Vick or his representatives are willing to undergo an exam for the league, but not a separate one for PETA. Vick's bankruptcy plan has twice been rejected by the courts, if he wants to have anything left, he may have to bow to PETA's demands or getting a contract to play again might not ever happen. Even if PETA & Vick come to an agreement, he still faces an uphill battle to get reinstated & signed. Please don't take this the wrong way, what he did was absolutely revolting to an animal lover like myself, but I think if he had been deeply involved in a drug ring or had abused a wife or girlfriend repeatedly, he'd have a better chance with the American public. The guy got caught, got punished, literally lost a fortune & I think he deserves a second chance, if it can be determined he knows what he did was barbaric & is genuinely contrite. Admittedly, I wasn't a Michael Vick fan before this mess & I didn't suddenly become one, I've always thought he was a selfish, immature person who couldn't care less about anyone outside his circle. But I also believe in a second chance for people who pay dearly for their missteps.
I talked yesterday about the release of Edgerrin James by the Cardinals. I've seen where there might be some interest in New Orleans. It would be a good spot for him. The Saints wanted a big back for short yardage & goaline situations. Tho he's not a 'big back', Edge has always excelled at both. In a limited role, he might stick around for another season to tote the rock 60-80 times & maybe score 6-8 more touchdowns. Plus he'd be playing on a contender for an offensive minded head coach in Sean Payton.
Thirty-five years ago today, I was honorably discharged from the Air Force. Thirty-three years ago today I was married to pretty wonderful girl named Linda. We've been together 33 years now & we had a very nice dinner at the Boardwalk Grill this evening to quietly celebrate our anniversary. Here's to us.
