THIS AND THAT..........TUESDAY
Braylon Edwards may be going to the Big Apple after all, just not to the Giants. A swap with the Jets might just happen. Browns' coach, Eric Mangini, would like Jet RB, Thomas Jones, a player he relied heavily on while he was running the Jets. New NYJ head coach, Rex Ryan knew the Jets needed a WR, but were unable to draft one last weekend. Edwards certainly would fill that need. The sticky part will be determining what else the Jets will have to give Cleveland, additional player(s), 2010 draft picks or both.
Arizona Cardinal DT/DE Darnell Dockett wants to be traded. He & disgruntled WR Anquan Boldin claimed hamstring pulls kept them from coming for the voluntary mini camp over the weekend. Quarterback Kurt Warner was the only other veteran not in attendance. He recently had hip surgery & was excused. Card coach Ken Whisenhunt was skeptical of Dockett & Boldin's injury claims since both are unhappy with their current contracts. Arizona management has basically ignored Dockett's pleas for a new contract & after he first requested a trade a couple of months ago, mum's the word on that front as well.
Missouri incoming freshman quarterback, Blaine Dalton, was arrested last Thursday by Columbia, Missouri police. He was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor minor in possession of alcohol & 3 traffic violations. Dalton was pulled over after an illegal lane change & crossing the centerline. A bottle of 10 hydrocodone tablets were found in the glove box of Dalton's vehicle. Police also found half a beer as well. After posting a $4,300 bond, he was released & pursuant to University policy, he was suspended indefinitely. On Saturday, Dalton's ex-teammate at Blue Springs High, Zach Wilson, told police the generic Lortabs were his. Wilson had undergone shoulder surgery & the pain killers were prescribed for him. He said they weren't strong enough & got a bigger dosage. He left the pills found in the car because "they didn't work anyway". Police haven't verified all of this yet but Dalton said the pills definitely weren't his & didn't know they were even in the glove box. Dalton led his Blue Springs team to back to back 6A state championship games, winning it all as a junior & losing last November. He graduated last December & has been on campus since. He was expected to compete for the starting QB spot with sophomore Blaine Gabbert.
It appears Peyton Manning will be the only quarterback to draw bigger paychecks than Chiefs' Matt Cassel in 2009. Cassel was the Patriots' franchise player & with that designation he is scheduled to make more than $13 million this season. It was widely thought when he came over in a trade last March, he & the Chiefs would work out a multi-year deal erasing the franchise tag. Is Scott Pioli concerned with the possibility Cassel could be a one-year wonder? The Chiefs certainly have plenty of salary cap room, so a new deal for Cassel might not be in the works until at least mid-season.
