THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE KINDA STRANGE
THE GOOD: Former Falcon & Buc running back, Warrick Dunn, just handed the keys for a new home to another single mother. This was house #86 that Dunn has provided in Baton Rouge, Tampa & Atlanta. Dunn's mom, Betty Smothers, was a single parent & a Baton Rouge police officer. She was murdered in 1993 during an ambush & holdup of a banker she worked for off-duty. At age 18, Warrick became the head of the family & raised his younger siblings. As a rookie he established the Warrick Dunn Foundation & Home for the Holidays. He began helping single working mothers who weren't able to buy their own homes. The charity pays a substantial down payment to reduce the mortage enough to make for an affordable monthly payment. After Katrina hit, Dunn personally called several players on every team in the NFL asking each team member to donate $5,000. At last count he had raised over $5 million dollars. As he nears retirement, he doesn't appear to be slowing down, Dunn said he would continue helping single moms, just like his mom, as long as he can. Isn't it wonderful to hear of someone doing so much for others when we're bombarded by so many stories about selfish athletes.
THE GOOD: Both Carson Palmer & Tom Brady are now practicing with no restrictions. Both QB's are throwing up to 150 passes a day with no pain. Palmer's injured elbow & Brady's knee are almost 100% & both are right on schedule for training camp.
THE GOOD: I was happy to hear NFL owners have decided not to vote on expanding the season to 17 or 18 games at this time. I still think it's only a matter of time, but I'm sure the players appreciate staying with a 16-game regular season, as long as it lasts.
THE BAD: I don't know that 'Bad' is a strong enough adjective for this guy. Travis Henry, former Pro Bowl running back for the Bills, former Titan & former Bronco, was arrested today in Auburndale, Florida. Let's hope he gets sentenced to jail time finally. Henry is a real solid citizen, he recently plea bargained a cocaine distribution beef down to probation. He's been arrested numerous times, mostly for failure to pay his child support, you see Travis has 11 kids with 10 different women. And he's only 31 years old. I told you he was a solid citizen. Three different child support complaints caused a judge to violate his probation & have him arrested today. The 3-time 1,000-yard rusher with 38 career touchdowns, was released by all three of his employers for his off-field transgressions, the last time by Denver in '08. Ex-head coach, Mike Shanahan had defended Henry to the league, the media & the fans, he was even fined $25,000 by the league for not following league mandates regarding Henry's repeated drug test failures. Like anyone else who got close to Henry, Shanahan got burned.
THE KINDA STRANGE: Buffalo mayor, Bryon Brown, presented Mr. Wonderful, Terrell Owens, with the Key to the City in a ceremony that was filmed for Owens' VH-1 reality show. Key to the city? For a player who has the capability of turning on coaches, teammates & fans, for a player who only has a 1-year contract? If his act does go sour, the mayor looks kinda like a fool doesn't he? But he wouldn't be the first & certainly not the last, humiliated in Owens' wake.
