THIS AND THAT..........TUESDAY
I told you last week about astronomical PSL(personal seat licenses) prices for the Jets, Giants & Cowboys, plus their 'premium seat' pricing. Gary Myers of the New York Daily News reports the Giants went completely thru the 140,000 people on their season ticket waiting list & still couldn't sell over 4,000 premium seats that were unsold. Their new stadium doesn't open for 16 months, so there's still time, but these sky-high prices coupled with the economic downturn makes me question just how many blackouts we're going to see as early as this September. It used to be when a team was close to a blackout on Thursday morning, a local business would step up & buy the remaining nose bleed seats. Unlike those seats, the ones that aren't selling in New Jersey & Texas are the most expensive ones, seats that cost $500-700 per chair. I doubt you're going to find a local businessman willing to fork over that kind of dough. We'll see.
The St. Louis Rams are for sale. The 60% of the team owned by Chip Rosenbloom & his sister, Lucia Rodriguez is on the market. The children of Georgia Frontiere have enlisted Goldman Sachs to find a potential buyer. Part of the sale agreement does not include any stipulations requiring new ownership to keep the team in St. Louis. The remaining 40% is owned by Stan Kroenke & because of his ownership of the Denver Nuggets & Colorado Avalanche, he cannot own a controlling interest in the Rams. Nevertheless, his 40% is not for sale.
If you're a Raider hater, check out www.bangcartoon.com & see the hysterical cartoon of Al Davis, JaMarcus Russell & Tom Cable rapping. The lyrics are a hoot.
The Philadelphia Eagles have signed Brian Stewart to coach their secondary. Sean McDermott, formerly the secondary coach, has been temporarily promoted to defensive coordinator since Jim Johnson has taken a medical leave to receive chemo for his skin cancer. Stewart was the Cowboys' D-coordinator until last season. Johnson has been a brilliant coach for a very long time & I sincerely want to see him back on the Eagles' sidelines very soon.
Jay Cutler, in a very short time, has managed to alienate a lot of Bear fans by blowing them off at Cub's games. Whenever he's been approached to sign an autograph at Wrigley Field, he just waves them off, regardless of age. The radio sportstalk shows have been bombarded with fans bitching about Cutler's behavior. I really don't think this kid 'gets it' & I wonder if he ever will.
Jessica Simpson gave her beau, Cowboy QB Tony Romo, a $100,000 boat for his 28th birthday last week. Pretty sweet gift don't you think?
After watching ESPN's Outside the Lines, Denver WR Brandon Marshall appears to be even more of a clueless punk than I thought he was. Marshall has had the police called to his location on 11 occasions, mostly for domestic violence related incidents. After a long report on Marshall's violent history was laid out, he appeared live with the host, Bob Ley. Marshall certainly didn't do anything to boost his image on the show. He stumbled over & over in response to Ley's questions & it was impossible to believe him, but I will say a lot of what his former girlfriend had to offer was shaky as well. Marshall is facing yet another suspension from the league & thru all of this he's whining about a new contract. Another guy who just doesn't 'get it'. Whether you're a professional athlete or an accountant, no man has the right to rough up a woman. Marshall is a great talent, but unless he can straighten out his life, he's headed for a very short career.
I wanted to tell you about a guy I'm sincerely rooting for in 2009. Viking defensive end, Kenechi Udeze, missed the entire 2008 season fighting leukemia. He finally received a bone marrow transplant last year from his brother & is working, literally day & night, to return to the NFL. Both his weight & strength were way down while struggling to survive. A bone marrow sample was taken last week & he's been given the go-ahead to return to a full workout schedule. He wants to be ready for opening day, playing opposite Jared Allen, at his old left defensive end position. Tho it's doubtful he'll be strong enough to start, he could be back on the roster by September. This kid was a force before he was diagnosed with the disease in February of '08 & he's an all around good guy. Here's hoping he can make a successful return in Minnesota.
Oh yeah, I read where ESPN's Erin Andrews wants to compete on ABC's "Dancing With The Stars". Since ABC owns ESPN, she'll probably get her wish. No real story here, it just allows me to post her picture again & receive a bunch of favorable comments. I feel so cheap.
