SOME QUICKIES..........THE T.G.I.F. EDITION

Eagle quarterback, Donovan McNabb, had his contract reworked adding another $5.3 million in guaranteed money over the next two seasons. This pumps his salary up to the $12.25 million per year mark. What puzzled many about this deal was McNabb wasn't required to commit another year or two to Philadelphia to get this added cash. He can walk away from the Eagles after the 2010 season, so why didn't management secure him for the remainder of his career? With a new collective bargaining agreement in the works, the "franchise tag" might not exist in 2011. Keeping McNabb happy was essential, but keeping him beyond 2010 seemed like the smart thing to do as well.

For all the draftniks & scouts who whined incessantly about Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry's supposed inability to rush the passer, I have but one thing to say.........I told you so. News out of the Seattle Seahawks' mini camp is that Curry has amazed people with his speed off the edge & his ability to turn the corner on the quarterback. So many of these draft 'experts' simply look at college production & project pro abilities from those stats, which is often incorrect & minimizes both the players potential & a pro position coach's ability to 'coach 'em up'.  I told you way back before the draft Curry played in a defense that didn't call for him to rush the passer. His subsequent lack of sack production was interpreted by the so-called experts as a substantial flaw in his game. I said in April, Curry was a superior athlete with great quickness & speed plus his work ethic & intelligence should allow him to do whatever a defensive coordinator calls on him to do. I think Tyson Jackson's impact on the Chiefs' defense had better be substantial by year 3 because Curry(he was the choice of both Chiefs' fans & KC media before the draft) looks like he will be in the league's upper echelon of outside linebackers very soon.

Well Bear fans won't have Rex Grossman to kick around anymore. Houston has signed Grossman to replace Sage Rosenfels as the
Texan's backup QB. The former Florida Gator & Heisman runner-up, had a love-hate relationship with the fans from Chicago. His hot & cold performances drove Bear fans crazy. He had 33 TD passes & 35 interceptions in his 6-years in Chicago, plus a very disappointing 54% completion ratio. If I were a Texan fan, Matt Schaub's injury history would scare me even more with Grossman waiting in the wings for playing time.

Constant knucklehead, Denver WR Brandon Marshall, is apparently going to boycott the Broncos' mini camp scheduled to start today. He's dissatisfied with his current contract that calls for him to make $2.20 million this season. He is rehabbing from hip surgery & wouldn't have to work out, but even that would be distasteful for Marshall, he's pretty unhappy. I guess his suspension, arrests & pending domestic violence trial somehow got lost in the shuffle with Brandon. Maybe keeping a low profile at this point would be the prudent thing to do, I guess not.  Apparently the only thing that matters to him is his contract, all those missteps he committed matter little when we're talking about money. He may join the club of receivers in the 'it's all about me' fraternity. Plaxico Burress, Chad Ochocinco, T.O., Jeremy Shockey & Kellen Winslow Jr. might welcome Marshall very soon. Being clueless has never been a crime, but when you add arrogance & selfishness, you get a player many teammates grow weary of quickly.

For the first time in televised history, the Rose Bowl will be on cable only. ESPN has signed to broadcast all of the BCS bowl games from 2011 till 2014. This doesn't bother me as ESPN is part of just about any cable package, unless you're attending Brigham Young University. The other reason I'm happy with this move is that FOXSports won't be doing these bowl games after 2010 & that is good news for all those who had to suffer thru these dreadful telecasts. When you don't broadcast college football all season, then cherry pick the top bowl games, what you get are lousy telecasts. Fox's cameramen & directors do a poor job of capturing the excitement & pageantry of college football games. The broadcasters are even worse, covering college players they haven't dealt with all year & it is painfully obvious. Their telecasts were so unprofessional & pathetic, I told my wife I'd like to listen to the radio broadcast but it's about 5 seconds ahead of the high-def DirecTV feed which won't work. ESPN has several good broadcast teams who cover college football all season, year after year. Same goes for the technical people, you just get a superior telecast. ABC, CBS, FOXSports Network & even Versus does a better job than Fox broadcast network did. With the exception of those still not getting cable or satellite TV, this move is very positive for football fans everywhere.
