THIS AND THAT..........SUNDAY
I've told you this week about Denver's disgruntled wide receiver, Brandon Marshall, he of numerous arrests, suspensions & fines. Forget about all of those problems, Brandon is very unhappy with his current contract that pays him a meager $2.2 million in guaranteed dollars. After he boycotted the first day of the Broncos' mandatory mini camp yesterday, head coach Josh McDaniels said Marshall planned to be in Denver by Friday night & participate in Saturday's practice in spite of his surgically repaired hip that isn't fully healed. Well, McDaniels was right, Marshall showed up Friday night, had a private sit-down with Denver owner, Pat Bowlin, then was seen leaving the facility with a couple of boxes containing the contents of his locker. Marshall was not at practice on Saturday. Is it possible he may be headed out of Denver just like his former QB Jay Cutler? Marshall is in his last year of his rookie contract & it appears he's unhappy with the Kyle Orton for Jay Cutler trade & how it will affect his stats & future contract. After all, it's all about him, right?
I told you before the draft of San Jose State defensive tackle, Jarron Gilbert & his YouTube video showing him jumping out of a 3' deep swimming pool directly onto the pool deck flat footed. Well now I've seen one nearly as impressive. Washington Redskin undrafted free agent, Keith Eloi, a wide receiver from Nebraska-Omaha has a YouTube video that should be seen. Eloi, standing in a parking lot at the Redskin practice facility, jumps flat-footed from the pavement into the bed of a Ford F-150 pickup truck, clearing the tailgate by 6-8" while wearing sandals. It's quite impressive, he actually jumps higher than Gilbert did in his swimming pool leap, but then he wasn't jumping out of water, plus Eloi weighs almost 100 pounds less than Gilbert.
Troy Aikman graduated from UCLA Saturday, 21 years after he played for the Bruins. I have to hand it to anyone who returns to finish their degree decades after their playing days.
The University of Missouri will institute mandatory sickle cell anemia testing for all incoming freshmen beginning this season. Mizzou is being sued by the family of Aaron O'Neal for $2 million in a wrongful death action. O'Neal collapsed minutes after a practice & died. The O'Neal family is accusing the school of negligence, claiming they knew of his sickle cell gene, which weakened him & ultimately caused his death. According to Mizzou officials, this policy will stand regardless of the trials outcome.
The Pittsburgh Steelers & Pittsburgh Pirates have been my second favorite teams for decades. Friday night the Pittsburgh Penguins won Lord Stanley's Cup, winning game 7 in Detroit. The last team to win a game 7 on the road was the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates, downing the Orioles in Baltimore, to win the World Series. The Penguins win coupled with the Steelers Super Bowl win last February, marked the first time a city won both the Super Bowl & the Stanley Cup in the same year. One more thing, all three Pittsburgh franchises wear the same team colors, black & gold.
