LEGAL BRIEFS AND THE POLICE BLOTTER
As reported here earlier today, Donte Stallworth plead guilty this morning in a Miami courtroom. He plead to DUI not DUI manslaughter. Because the victim's family was satisfied with their settlement they signed off on the major charge. The settlement is rumored to be in the $3-5 million range. Stallworth was taken into custody following the court proceedings & will do 30 days in jail. He will also do 2 years under house arrest with electronic monitoring. He was given 8 years probation, 1,000 hours of community service, a $2,500 donation to M.A.D.., a $2,500 donation to Parents of Murdered Children & a lifetime forfeiture of his drivers license. The minimum sentence for DUI manslaughter is 4 years, but if the family is satisfied with the punishment & any restitution involved, the manslaughter portion of the charges can be dropped. The prosecutor & the judge both stated Stallworth was completely cooperative with police, investigators & the D.A.'s office. He was also totally contrite regarding his guilt. He had a long list of community involvement & charitable work plus he'd never been arrested or ticketed by police. Yes, he is only doing 30 days in jail but 2-years of house arrest is the most I've ever heard of plus he's still facing a meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell which could result in a suspension. Considering Goodell won't speak to Michael Vick while he is on home arrest, will Stallworth be inactive for the next 2 years while he's on home arrest? The worst part of this entire ordeal is that Donte will have to face the fact he was involved in an accident where someone lost their life. Apparently this has made quite an impact on him. Amen.
Fugitive ex-quarterback Ryan Leaf has turned up in Vancouver, British Columbia. Prosecuting attorney James Farren of Randall County Texas, stated that if Leaf doesn't surrender to county deputies by Thursday afternoon, extradition procedures will begin with a formal request that Leaf be arrested by Canadian law enforcement officials. Leaf's originally was charged with burglary, possession of a controlled substance(hydrocodone), lying to a police officer & 3 other lesser offenses. He vanished into thin air & his attorney has come out weekly to state Leaf was going to turn himself in the next day, but he hasn't. The fugitive warrant, which was issued May 20th, has now snowballed into a serious mess involving 2 countries. Leaf, the second overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft, has long been considered the biggest bust in history. He still made tens of millions in guaranteed money with 3 different teams before being cut for the last time by Dallas. His recent troubles came while he was the QB coach at West Texas A&M.
