THE QUICKIES..........TUESDAY EDITION

For those of you who watched the water-logged U.S. Open on the Bethpage Black course on Long Island, New York, consider this, Steeler quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, played the course Wednesday with Michael Jordan & shot 81. Pretty impressive.

Some in the Tampa Bay media have taken to calling TE Kellen Winslow Jr. 'Sarge'. Winslow's locker room tirade while at Miami of "Hey, I'm a f---ing soldier, out there fighting in a war, a soldier! If I don't kill them, they'll try to kill me, I don't care about anybody else on that field except guys from this U."  These comments annoyed more than the media as they were spouted about six months after the Iraq War began. Coupled with the fact it took nearly a week for Winslow to apologize, he's never been really popular with the public, but he doesn't really care cuz he's a 'f---ing soldier'. He told the reporters who kept calling him 'Sarge' to stop it & when they didn't, he screamed at them to stop. Let's see.......you think opposing defenders will taunt Winslow with 'Sarge' from this day forward? Yeah, I think so. Yeah, I hope so.

Staying in Tampa for a minute, don't be shocked if rookie QB Josh Freeman starts opening day. Apparently veteran Byron Leftwich isn't really impressing anyone during the OTA's & mini camp. He still has a very slow drop & when preparing to throw the ball, he still brings the ball down below his waist before bringing it back up to the throwing position. It just takes too long to get the ball out. Added to his painfully slow footspeed, Freeman is looking better, even tho he is really a long way from being starting QB ready.

Pop singer Gloria Estefan & her husband, Emilio, are going to purchase a small percentage of the Miami Dolphins.

Fugitive ex-quarterback, Ryan Leaf, turned himself into the Warren County sheriff on Friday afternoon. He posted $15,000 bond & was released. He claims to have completed rehab for his prescription drug problem.

Ex-Cleveland Brown QB, Bernie Kosar, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Various reports cite his assets at $2.5-5 million & debts of nearly $20 million. Bernie lost his restaurant last year, his wife divorced him recently & he owes both the Browns & the Arena Football League money. Good luck Bernie.

Another reason Donte Stallworth was given such a light sentence by a Miami judge was a reported surveillance video that showed the victim, Victor Reyes, leaving a construction site & stepping into the street without looking to his right. The video was provided by the company that employed Reyes as a crane operator. Apparently the D.A.'s office knew there was certainly some 'reasonable doubt'.

Michael Huff was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in 2006 with the 7th overall pick & was installed as the starting free safety by opening day. Huff started 39 consecutive games before losing his job last year at midseason. In those 39 starts, Huff has intercepted only one pass, yes, only one. He is in year 4 of a 6-year, $43 million deal & it's no secret in Oakland, if he doesn't win back his job, he will most likely be cut even before the season begins.

Let's stay in Oakland with news of my favorite over rated rookie wide receiver, Darrius Heyward-Bey. 'DHB', as he likes to be called, hasn't made much of an impression so far. More than a few dropped passes & a lingering hamstring strain are wearing thin with his veteran teammates, who don't call him DHB, preferring 'Big Money'. Future Hall of Fame wide receiver & ESPN analyst, Chris Carter said "No one in the world except the Raiders thought he was the best receiver in the draft". I agree, if the guy can't even make first team all-conference, how is he the best receiver in the entire draft?  Some members of the Bay Area media are comparing DHB to former Forty Niner bust, Rashaun Woods. Woods, also a first round pick caught 7 passes in his Niner career. He later was cut by both San Diego & Denver without playing in a regular season game.  Really not who you want to be compared to right?

I read a short interview by Peter King with Warren Sapp. The thing I've always loved about Sapp is he says exactly what's on his mind, not always politically correct & never sugarcoated. Sapp's main thrust in this interview was how little respect young players today have for the history of the game, the great players in history & veteran leadership in the league right now. They want fame, but have no clue that it takes years of hard work & dedication to reach the all-pro level. Sapp told of his Raider linemates who never listened to him regarding opponents, film study & preparation. Jack Tatum showed up one day at the practice facility & Sapp asked his defensive teammates if they knew who the 'Assassin' was & the reply was "some old guy, who cares". Responding to Vince Young's claim that Kerry Collins couldn't relate to the pressure the he was under, Sapp said "Oh yeah, Kerry Collins has had such a pressure-free career, Collins was a high #1 pick, like Young, he was humiliated after making racist remarks that led to him being traded, fought alcoholism, got traded 2 more times before starting last year after Young's meltdown & played brilliantly. Vince Young ought sit & listen to every word that comes out of Kerry Collin's mouth". Well said Warren.

The new stadium in Texas is being referred to as the 'Jones-Mahal'(I love it!!) by some media people in the Lone Star State. Jerry Jones, in an effort to reduce his nut on this stadium as soon as possible, is reaching out to colleges, trying to make some fresh matchups & bring new fans to his 93,000 seat football palace. I chuckle every time a writer describes the place as having "2,800 flat screen TVs", a fact that is always included in any story about the stadium. Like having 2,800 flat screens makes it the ultimate stadium for a spectator. How about saying something like "there are no restricted view seats" or "you won't need a Sherpa guide to reach the top rows in the upper deck". He has supposedly booked an Arizona State/Notre Dame matchup for 2013, definitely a fresh matchup.  He has 4 college games this season including the classic 'Red River Shootout', Oklahoma vs Texas. Sadly, the tickets cost more than double from last year's game in the Cotton Bowl, but hey, does the Cotton Bowl have 2,800 flat screen TVs?
