THIS AND THAT..........WEDNESDAY

The Kansas City Chiefs signed a pair of Browns today. Fifth round draft pick, Colin Brown of Mizzou, signed a 3-year contract worth $1.54 million including a $154,000 signing bonus. Brown projects to right tackle & will most likely backup last years' starter, Damien McIntosh. I doubt he will play at his college weight of 341 considering head coach Todd Haley's desire to have a lean, mean football team.  Nine-year veteran safety, Mike Brown, also signed with the Chiefs. I told you about ten days ago the Chiefs were looking at the former Chicago Bear Pro Bowler. The 31-year old Brown, when healthy, has been a monster, tho he played in all 16 games last season, he missed a lot of playing time from '04-'07. He holds the Bear record for most career defensive touchdowns. He was a 2nd round pick out of Nebraska. Good pickup in another of Scott Pioli's stop-gap moves to right the ship in K.C.

I told you Monday about the possibility of rookie Josh Freeman becoming the Buccaneers' starting QB now, rather than later. Tampa Bay QB coach, Greg Olson, gushed over Freeman's play at mini camp while in the same interview he spoke of the disappointing play of Byron Leftwich & Luke McKown, veterans expected to compete for the starting job. This is the second very young coaching staff to make a major blunder regarding their quarterback situation, the mess created in Denver by Josh McDaniels came 1st. The problem with Olson's comments are that Freeman has yet to sign a contract. His agent, Ken 'Fuzzy' Kremer, has got to be thrilled by Olson's remarks. It just makes Freeman's asking price that much higher. If it was obvious to all that he'd be the clipboard holder all season as the 3rd stringer, the contract demands would be less. But now that the coaching staff has talked up the rookie from Kansas State, he will certainly make more from day one.

I didn't waste my time watching it last night, but I did catch an uncensored 1-minute YouTube video of T.O. & his teammate, model Joanna Krupa, on ABC's Superstars' competition. They were the first team eliminated & Krupa let loose a barrage of curse words directed at Owens. How's it feel Terrell to have someone humiliate you on national TV like you've done to former coaches & quarterbacks? Is this show pro wrestling? Is it scripted? Irregardless, it's pretty near the bottom of the reality TV barrel.

In another case of senseless violence, Ed Thomas, an Iowa high school football coach & former winner of the NFL's high school coach of the year, was shot & killed this morning. Thomas, a 31-year veteran & maybe the most celebrated coach in Iowa H.S. history, was shot in the weight room in front of 30 or so of his players there working out. The shooter, a former player 24-year old Mark Becker, was arrested immediately & no motive has been given. Thomas coached 4 current NFL players, Casey Wiegmann, Brad Meester, Aaron Kampman & Jared DeVries, while they attended Aplington-Parkersburg High. He was known as a devout Christian & the entire community is both devastated & wondering why this happened.
