THIS AND THAT..........MONDAY

Trent Green subbed for SI.com's, Peter King today & wrote his own column & in it he made an important observation. Green wrote: "With the economy the way it is, everyone in league circles need to be aware of how they portray their side of things thru the media. People are not going to want to hear flippant remarks concerning multi-million dollar deals." Great sentiment Trent, I question whether a lot of these selfish, me, me, me types will be able to control themselves once the collective bargaining talks begin. With millions out of work, millions more fearing layoffs & the billions lost in retirement accounts, it would be nice if the talks went smoothly & we aren't asked to sympathize with all the millionaires involved on both sides.

Raider QB JaMarcus Russell recently implored his teammates to be present for all the OTA's & to keep their focus once training camp starts. This was quite a departure for Russell, who really hasn't been much of a leader since Oakland picked him #1 overall two years ago. Many saw this as a defining moment in Russell's career. Last week the Raiders' OTA's ended with Russell missing the last day with no explanation. Yes, it very well could have been a defining moment for Russell, I really don't see him as a team leader & his absence makes my point.

Sergio Kindle, Texas Longhorn linebacker, has taken another step backward in his development as a player & a person. At about 1:30 AM Sunday, Kindle drove his car into an apartment near the university campus. He & three companions pushed the car out of the apartment without checking to see if anyone in the residence was trapped or injured. They pushed the car down the block & abandoned it. Kindle called in a police report later Sunday. His attorney Brian Roarke, said Kindle thought he had a concussion, so he went home & went to bed. The 21-year old resident of the apartment was in bed asleep & luckily uninjured. Many of her belongings, including her computer, printer & TV, were destroyed. Austin Police say that right now, they don't see charges being filed against Kindle. Since Kindle didn't speak with police for almost 9 hours after the accident, he wasn't given a breathalyser test. He was convicted of a DUI two years ago & is still on probation from that arrest. Kindle is considered to be a 1st round pick in next year's draft.  Roarke said Kindle was texting while driving & that was the cause of the accident.

Not a phony leader, far from selfish, anything but reckless, but sadly, often forgotten, was former Kansas City Chiefs' running back, Joe Delaney. On June 29, 1983, Delaney jumped into a pond in an attempt to save 3 young boys who were struggling to keep from drowning. Delaney, who couldn't swim & was scared of the water, drowned, along with 2 of the boys. His widow received the Presidential Citizens Medal from Ronald Reagan for bravery. Delaney was the 1981 Rookie of the Year & made the Pro Bowl. His number 37 wasn't officially retired, but has never been worn since his death. He was finally enshrined in the Chiefs Hall of Fame in 2004. I can remember vividly the shock & sorrow in Kansas City on this day, 26 years ago.  He was the true definition of a hero, I just wish more people actually knew his story both on & off the field.
