MIDWEEK THIS AND THAT

The Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, has announced the new Super Bowl exhibit named for Lamar Hunt. Hunt was founder of the Dallas Texans/Kansas City Chiefs & co-founder of the American Football League. Hunt also spearheaded the AFL/NFL merger & the first AFL/NFL World Championship game, an event that he named "The Super Bowl", that became the #1 viewed single-day sporting event in the world. Naming it after anyone else would have been sacrilege. The $2.4 million addition will open two days before induction weekend in August. Former Chief Derrick Thomas will be inducted that weekend.

Has anyone else noticed during the mainstream media's reporting of the Steve McNair murder that they continually talk of the McNair-led Titans Super Bowl comeback that "fell just one yard short of winning". Uh, the final score was 23-16, a touchdown & extra point ties the game, it doesn't win it. What part don't they understand, the math or the scoring required to actually win?  For the Titans to win, they would have had to make a 2-point conversion. I watch way too much cable news all day & have become hyper-sensitive.

Something good involving a football player named McNair. Yeah, that McNair. Steve McNair Jr., a senior wide receiver at Oak Grove High School in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, has received scholarship offers from 8 schools so far. West Virginia, Tulsa, Mississippi State, Southern Miss, Ole Miss, Louisiana Tech, Kentucky & his father's alma matter, Alcorn State. Two recruiting websites name Alabama & Florida as interested as well. He caught 58 passes for 962 yards & 8 TD's as a junior. He's was catching passes from Brett Favre while #4 was determining whether or not he needed surgery on his shoulder.

Vernon Gohlston, the 6th player taken in the 2008 draft, was said to be the pet project of new Jet's coach, Rex Ryan. The defensive end had a miserable rookie season, making only 4 tackles & now with the 4-game suspension of the Jets only other legitimate pass rusher, Calvin Pace, rapid improvement from Gohlston was essential to defensive improvement in New York. Now word out of the Jet's OTA's & mini camp, is that Gohlston has made almost zero improvement & Ryan is starting to lose his patience. Not only is his effort not up to par, his knowledge of the defensive playbook & recognition skills are wanting as well. The Jets have a small fortune invested in Gohlston & I think they'll continue to try to turn this kid around, but don't be shocked if Ryan, a rookie head coach, cuts him, making a statement to his team that no one is untouchable.

I caught Kansas head coach, Mark Mangino, on "College Football Live" yesterday & as much as this Mizzou diehard hates to say it, this is a quality football coach. KU has long been a basketball school, but in his 7 seasons in Lawrence, Kansas, he has built a very competitive football program. Admittedly the deck is stacked against any other sport at KU other than basketball, if you go there, you know as a football player, you'll always be considered no better than second-best. Their Memorial Stadium is certainly nothing special, built in 1921, it didn't even have permanent lights until 1997 & has limited capacity at 50,071. They are building a completely new football training facilities with weight rooms, meeting rooms, video study facilities & coaches offices. Mangino certainly doesn't get the cream of the crop recruiting-wise either & yet his teams seem to improve every year. I make them the favorite in the Big-12 North this season. One thing Mangino said when asked about who the Jayhawks biggest rival was, "doesn't matter who I think our biggest rival was when I came here from Oklahoma, I was told by the powers that be, you have to beat Missouri, you have to". He's right. This series, which began in 1891, is the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi & renamed "The Border War" in 1995, it sprung from hatred that started during the Civil War.
