THIS AND THAT..........MONDAY

If you haven't heard, Michael Vick has been 'conditionally' reinstated to the NFL. He can sign immediately with any team that will have him, he can begin practicing immediately & is OK'd to play in all preseason games. He is, however, not eligible to return to regular season games until week five. I think this suspension is strictly a P.R. move, the league doesn't want his return to overshadow opening weekend, his return will be a 3-ring circus & the NFL doesn't want the circus infringing on the season's first month. I also believe this latest suspension had a lot to do with his face-to-face meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell in New York, during the 2007 draft, when he looked Goodell in the eye & lied his ass off about his involvement in the dog-fighting operation. I think Goodell made it clear this is truly his one & only chance, he had better toe the line. I'm not a fan of Michael Vick, never was & as an animal lover, I think his crimes were truly abhorrent. But, I believe everyone deserves a second chance, if Vick is able to resurrect his NFL career, more power to him. If he's truly contrite, God Bless him & to his detractors, let's move on, don't forget, but forgive.

Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morganthau said in an interview with The New York Post regarding Plaxico Burress, "We've always taken the position that he's going to have to go to jail, whether by trial or by plea". Burress defense attorney, Benjamin Brafman, says Morganthau has now prejudiced the grand jury hearing the facts in this case. Morganthau also disclosed that plea negotiations had broken off because Burress wouldn't agree to 2 years in jail. The bad news for Plaxico is, if a plea agreement isn't reached & he's convicted, he will be looking at a mandatory 3 1/2 years minimum sentence. So some reasonable common sense had better surface within the Burress camp very soon, because if the grand jury indicts him on the gun charges, his very limited bargaining power diminishes even more.

I'm not sure that Twitter is such a good idea for some of the NFL's most outspoken 'Tweeters'. You'll recall Chad Ochocinco had his promised 'In-game Tweets' squashed by the league office. Three weekend Tweets sort of make my point. Charger linebacker, Shaun Phillips, showed his sensitivity when he Tweeted "someone send me the link to the Erin Andrews video". Buffalo's Terrell Owens said "Mike Vick has been penalized enough, he did 23 months in jail, Roger Goodell ought to go to jail for 23 months". He's all yours Buffalo. And last but not least, 2nd year running back & budding loudmouth, Tennessee's Chris Johnson, Tweeted today "THE NFL TRIPPIN THEY NEED TO LET MIKE VICK PLAY HE ALREADY BEEN IN JAIL 2 YEARS DAMN WTF IM UPSET".  Just like the 'sexting' cell phone pics & so many nude photos now floating around the internet, once it goes on there, it on there permanently, think before you pose, promise or post.

Speaking of Terrell Owens, I wasted nearly an hour of my time watching parts of two reality shows on MTV featuring Owens. I'll admit the curiosity factor overwhelmed me. It won't happen again. I'm not alone, I caught Donovan McNabb's reaction to the T.O. Show this morning from Eagles' camp, it wasn't good. Not a big surprise considering how Owens trashed him, just like he's trashed every quarterback he's played with since Steve Young. Once again, he's all yours Buffalo.

With NFL training camps opening everyday this week, the absence of high draft picks is alarming. Only 4 have signed as of this afternoon. Mathew Stafford, Mark Sanchez, Cleveland center Alex Mack & Pittsburgh DL Ziggy Hood, are the only 1st rounders to have signed a contract. Some are rumored to be very close to finalizing contract talks, but on the other end of the spectrum sit two of the bigger names in this year's rookie crop. It has been reported from several sources that Forty-Niner wide receiver, Michael Crabtree & his agent, aren't even in negotiation with Frisco, virtually nothing has been agreed to as of yet. Buffalo's Aaron Maybin, picked 11th, right after Crabtree, also maybe looking at an extended holdout & has no talks scheduled with team management. A number of clubs have everyone signed except their top pick. Others, like Kansas City, don't have any of their top 3 or 4 picks signed. With more camp opening everyday, guys with a lot to learn are sitting, waiting & not learning a thing.

I read something Saturday that I found very odd. Arizona Cardinal head coach, Ken Whisenhunt, has never watched game film or a taped telecast of last February's Super Bowl. I'm sure the last minute loss is still painful, but it still seems odd that a coach wouldn't want to see how his team performed in their biggest test. Whisenhunt said he'd watch the game sometime during training camp.

A quick personal note from a very proud uncle. My nephew Jared finally got engaged to his longtime girlfriend Ashley & we couldn't be happier, they're wonderful people & we're very happy for them. The Laker Girls made a very wise choice selecting my niece Erin for another year, maybe she can help them to a second consecutive NBA Championship. Great job Erin!
