JIM JOHNSON PASSES AWAY
Jim Johnson passed away today after a long battle with cancer, he was 68. Johnson was defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles for the past 10 years. He was a great one, respected by his players, his peers & fans thruout the NFL. His blitzing schemes were some of the hardest to diagnose & his defenders always played with reckless abandon. It was exciting watching the Eagle defense attack, they always attacked. Johnson & the Steelers' Dick LeBeau, had been at the top of the NFL's defensive heap for a long time.
Johnson played at the University of Missouri from 1959-62 for Dan Devine & Johnson was an all Big-8 quarterback. He later signed with the Buffalo Bills of the AFL & played tight end. He moved into coaching in 1967 as head coach at Missouri Southern. He later rejoined Dan Devine at Notre Dame in 1977 as the defensive backs coach. Notre Dame won the National Championship that season. He stayed at Notre Dame for 7 years & then made his way into the NFL. Always a defensive coach, he became the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts in 1996. He later moved onto Andy Reid's staff at Philadelphia, where he remained until his death.
