QUICK WEDNESDAY NOTES
A football game at Wrigley Field? Not since the Bears played there in 1970 has the Chicago landmark hosted a football game. That may all be coming to an end in the near future as Northwestern & the University of Illinois are in talks for a couple of games at the historic ball park. I question the motivation here, nearly all school presidents are completely on board with the BCS doctrine of money, money, money. Unless they are able to charge a seat premium for this matchup at Wrigley, it doesn't make financial sense, Wrigley can't be configured for football & have a capacity comparable to Illinois or Northwestern. Plus local businesses raise a stink because it's the same as another road game to them. Illinois is opting out of their annual butt-kicking in St Louis at the hands of the Missouri Tigers, so maybe they're looking for another neutral site game to try to sell their fan base.
Texas QB Colt McCoy recently had a $5 million insurance policy taken out in case an injury keeps him from playing football at the next level. OU's Sam Bradford has a similar policy. It's unknown if Florida's Tim Tebow has a like policy, but thanks to a very bizarre question from the media, I know Tebow's a virgin. Oy vey.
Apparently Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morganthau will include Giants' linebacker Antonio Pierce in the Plaxico Burress gun case after all. The Giants were very outspoken in their disappointment that Pierce could be convicted for transporting Burress' gun back to New Jersey after Plaxico blew a hole in his leg November 28th in a Manhattan night club. According to a statement from the Giants, it is their belief Antonio Pierce has fully cooperated with the D.A.'s office as well as the police & he shouldn't be prosecuted. Burress voluntarily testified for over 2 hours today before a Manhattan grand jury, no word if Pierce will be called. According to the D.A.'s office, Pierce is just as culpable in this crime. The Giants' linebacker depth is iffy at best, losing Pierce would be a major blow in their effort to repeat as NFC Eastern Champs.
The Chiefs signed their third round selection, Defensive end Alex Magee signed a 4-year deal today & will report to camp on time. Three other draftees remain unsigned, including first rounder DE Tyson Jackson.
I have it on very good authority, the Chiefs were able to sell only 48,950 season tickets. Quite a slide from just a few years ago when they sold 71,000 season tickets & had 19,000 on the waiting list. Six wins in 2 seasons coupled with a very shaky economy have brought the Chiefs to this point, a point they can recover from quickly by winning. The stadium renovation will be completed soon, so the curiosity factor will be further piqued by having a team that shows it's headed in the right direction.
