CHIEFS SIGN AMANI TOOMER
The Kansas City Chiefs signed veteran wide receiver Amani Toomer today. The ex-Giant will be 35 on Saturday. The 6' 3" 205-pound Toomer has 668 lifetime receptions & 54 touchdowns. He was limited by injury last season catching only 48 balls for 580 yards & 4 TDs. With all 4 NFC East teams on the schedule in weeks 3 thru 6, Toomer's 13 years experience in this division might help. In fact, I could see him the 35-year old Toomer starting with 36-year old Bobby Engram playing the slot position. With or without Toomer, the Chiefs have little speed outside, so he might get some real playing time in this underachieving group of wide receivers.
They had also auditioned former Seahawk D.J. Hackett & ex-Bear bust, David Terrell. Toomer came in after this pair had worked out & he was offered a one-year contract. The Chiefs also signed ex-Patriot linebacker Vince Redd. He was signed as an undrafted rookie & assigned to the Pats practice squad. Redd was activated in late November as an injury replacement, making 8 tackles. He was waived by New England August 2nd & was signed immediately by Kansas City. The 6' 6" 262-pound former defensive end at Liberty University. He had some eye-popping numbers at the '08 NFL combine running a 4.56 40-yard dash, recording a 39" vertical jump & a 9' 10" standing long jump. His disappointing 13 reps on the bench press was the only downside. He'll be thrown into the linebacker mix this preseason, possibly going on the practice squad again.
Kansas City waived offensive lineman Edwin Harrison to make room for Redd, they'll have to make room for Toomer by cutting another player yet to be determined.
