TOOMER PRACTICES & SO DOES DORSEY........FINALLY

Newly signed wide receiver, Amani Toomer was in uniform yesterday & even made a spectacular catch, earning very loud compliments from head coach Todd Haley. Haley had become so frustrated by the dropped passes & poor reads by his receiving corp, Toomer was a relief. He knows how to read defenses, he runs good routes, gets open & he catches the ball. Really pretty simple.  I told you way back in March the Chiefs had only 18-20 quality NFL players. I stand by that comment & the signings of Zach Thomas, Mike Goff, Mike Brown, Bobby Engram & now Amani Toomer sort of confirms that now doesn't it? Even if all of these older vets can stay healthy & assuming they still have something left in the tank, the Chiefs are not going to equal either Miami or Atlanta, going from 'worst to first'. Get used to it, it's not going to happen. These are stop-gap signings, an attempt to fill the roster with admittedly older, but former high-quality players, instead of younger guys, who honestly have no chance of ever becoming quality NFL starters or role players. The Chiefs front office, scouting department & coaching staffs of the last 10 years have caused this current talent-gap & it's not going to go away overnight or after one camp. It will probably be 2011 before this team is a true Super Bowl contender.

Glenn Dorsey returned to regular practice for the first time since camp opened. Haley said Dorsey still wasn't were he wanted him to be conditioning-wise, but he was close & had given a very good effort. The current defensive end situation isn't too hot, 1st round pick, Tyson Jackson, is still unsigned, Dorsey hasn't practiced until today, the only guy making strides in this defense is 3rd round rookie Alex Magee. Magee hasn't missed any snaps, plus I've heard Dorsey might just be so far behind in his transition to the 3-4, that Magee will see major playing time in the preseason & then, who knows?

Adam Teicher of The Kansas City Star reports Brodie Croyle has looked a lot better than Tyler Thigpen so far. Thigpen's passes have been neither on time nor accurate. Tight end Tony Curtis was waived this morning to create a roster spot for Amani Toomer.
