THIS AND THAT..........THURSDAY(THE VERY, VERY EARLY EDITION)

More injury news & it's not good. Falcon wide receiver Harry Douglas blew out his ACL during a Wednesday afternoon practice. Atlanta is already short, with '08 leading receiver, Roddy White, already holding out. Douglas was competing for the #2 receiver spot currently held by Michael Jenkins. Douglas was also a fine punt returner. It appears White suddenly has more leverage in his battle to get a new contract. The Bengals received a real scare yesterday when tight end Ben Utecht sustained a concussion & was motionless on the field for nearly 15 minutes. He had sensation in his limbs thankfully, but it appears he'll be down for a while, possibly elevating rookie Chase Coffman to the starting spot. Cincinnati already lost their blocking TE, Reggie Kelly, with a torn Achilles tendon over the weekend. Cardinal rookie running back, Beanie Wells, won't have his sprained ankle evaluated until this weekend. That means Wells will miss all but a half an hour of the first 10 days of practice, not what the Cards needed with the departure of Edgerrin James & J.J. Arrington. He certainly needs the reps with the first team offense, but just like his days at Ohio State, Wells can't stay on the field.

Hooray for Jared Allen. The Pro Bowl pass rusher from the Minnesota Vikings went to the middle east to visit the troops in both Iraq & Afghanistan last winter. Yesterday he stayed after practice, standing on the field in the sun, talking to military personnel for over 2 hours. How unselfish is that? God Bless you Jared Allen.

I mentioned recently I don't get involved with fantasy football, playing it, talking about it or writing about it. I told you I would mention a player from time to time I think could be a sleeper or a guy ready to breakout in fantasy football. The guy I mentioned before was Bear TE, Greg Olson. Now I read in the Chicago papers Olson has quickly become Jay Cutler's favorite receiver in camp so far. Make a note of that for draft day.

The Chiefs continue to scoop up New England castoffs. Kansas City claimed QB Matt Gutierrez on waivers form the Patriots, making him the second ex-Pat signal caller in camp. Monday, the Patriots signed Andrew Walter, a former Oakland Raider part-time starter & waived Gutierrez to make room for him. Now to complete the circle, the Raiders should sign ex-Chief QB, Ingle Martin, who was waived to make room for Gutierrez.

This morning's Twitter update: New Ram coach Steve Spagnoula, during a team meeting, asked his players "is Twitter something you use on your cell phone or do you buy a whole Twitter device?" Steve's been really busy in his new job apparently, no time for any new-fangled stuff.

Twitter update #2: Tuesday, the United States Marine Corp laid down the law regarding Twitter. No, no, no. No Marine personnel are to ever use the social networking platform while on duty under any circumstances. They are also forbidden to use Twitter while deployed overseas.  Pretty clear don't you think? Twitter's popularity might just be very short-lived.
