MORE INJURIES, STALLWORTH SUSPENDED & JAY CUTLER-WANNABE GM

Another day, another list of serious injuries. Kody Spano, Nebraska's backup QB, tore his ACL yesterday & will be lost for the season. Now the only two candidates to fill Spano's spot are Cody Green, a true freshman & LaTravis Washington, who was a linebacker before spring practice. Starter Zac Lee had better stay healthy. Iowa starting cornerback Jordan Bernstine suffered a broken ankle & he too will be out until 2010. Baron Batch, Texas Tech's leading rusher, suffered an unknown arm injury yesterday & will be out about 4-6 weeks. It's unknown if he will be able to return by September 19th when Red Raiders play Texas.

I told you yesterday about Ohio State linebacker, Tyler Moeller, who will sit out the 2009 season after sustaining a head injury on a family vacation in Florida. The family was in Florida to attend Moeller's grandparents 50th wedding anniversary celebration. After the reception, Tyler & several family members including 2 uncles, went to a local bar & grill. After just a few minutes, a bar patron assaulted Moeller knocking him to the floor injuring his head. The assailant was arrested immediately & Moeller was transported to the hospital. He was in the ICU for 3 days before being released. The family brought him back to Ohio & by the weekend he was experiencing severe pain & on Saturday afternoon, he underwent surgery to relieve pressure in his brain. The family hasn't commented on his assailant's motive.

Browns' wide receiver, Donte Stallworth, was suspended today for the entire season without pay. Commissioner Roger Goodell had a private meeting with Stallworth Monday & the penalty wasn't a big shock. Stallworth has cooperated fully with police & prosecutors since the accident that took 59-year old Mario Reyes' life. Stallworth's .126 blood alcohol level & Reyes' no-look-dart into traffic were both considered in Stallworth's DUI-manslaughter conviction. Stallworth settled with the Reyes family out of court in June. Stallworth served but 28 days in jail, but he is under a 2-year version of house arrest called 'community confinement' down in Florida. He is able to leave his home to shop within 5 miles, he can attend church, doctor's appointments, to work out, but that's it. He must do 1,000 hours of community service & he had to surrender his Florida drivers license for life. His football stats had been declining in the past 2 years & he'll be 30 when he's eligible to return to the league, so his football career may be over as well. One terribly bad decision, a lot of ruined lives.

Looks like Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler wants to expand his responsibilities with the Bears to include general manager. Cutler said last night "I think they're definitely going to ask me, if they don't ask me, I'm going to tell them what I think". Cutler was referring to the Bears' roster. So what happens if Lovie Smith waives someone on Cutler's list? Will Cutler voice his disapproval to the media? Anyone surprised that Cutler has crossed yet another line with yet another team? Once again, be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

Tom Brady is scheduled to start tonight against the Eagles. Brady, who wasn't allowed to play in the preseason last year, was injured in the 1st quarter on opening day & hasn't played since. He claimed that had he been able to play in the exhibition season, he would have been slightly quicker in the pocket & probably would've sidestepped Bernard Pollard's tackle.

The wayward OLB/DE Stryker Sulak has landed in Green Bay. He was finally signed to a contract, something he wasn't able to do before the Raiders cut him almost sight unseen as their 6th round draft pick.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have stepped up their campaign to bring former season ticket holders back into the fold. The Jags aren't selling tickets, plain & simple. Jacksonville is looking down the barrel of every home game being blacked out. According to reports out of Florida, they're not even close at this time. They've begun sending out letters asking fans to "come back to Jaguar football, we'll welcome you with open arms. Our coaches & players have been working endlessly to bring this team back to the level you've come to expect". It's not just teams that have fallen from grace by not making the playoffs, the Chargers announced this afternoon, their preseason game this weekend will be blacked out in the San Diego viewing area. Football fans in many cities had better be prepared for the inevitability of regular season blackouts. Too many Americans have lost too many jobs for every seat to be filled in nearly every stadium this fall.

Denver wide receiver Brandon Marshall's assault trial began this morning in Atlanta. It's expected to go to the jury by tomorrow afternoon. A conviction could result in a lengthy suspension as the commissioner told Marshall he "needed to remain trouble-free" after his numerous run-ins with the law.

Today's real name of the day: Qua Huzzie, linebacker, Kentucky.
