FRIDAY NIGHT EXHIBITION GAME NOTES
I don't know how things could have gone much worse for the Denver Broncos Friday night in San Francisco. They lost the game, their new quarterback, Kyle Orton, looked pretty bad throwing 3 first half interceptions & #1 draft pick, running back Knowshon Moreno, sustained some sort of leg injury & was taken to the locker room immediately. The Denver Post reports tonight, Moreno will undergo an MRI Saturday. Backup QB Chris Simms played the second half & was effective playing with the 2nd teamers. Simms was 11 of 17 for 142 yards & 2 touchdowns. I would guess a quarterback controversy, real or imagined, probably began in every Denver-area sportsbar immediately following the game. Niner rookie RB Glen Coffee looked great running for 67 yards on 14 carries. Starting RB Frank Gore was held out of the Game by Mike Singletary. For a 17-16 game between 2 also-rans, this was a pretty entertaining contest.
The quarterback battle in Minnesota between Tavaris Jackson & Sage Rosenfels began in ernest Friday evening & from what I saw, Rosenfels took round one. He was 10 of 13 for 91 yards & guided the Vikings to their first 10 points. Jackson completed 7 of 15 for just 39 yards & no points. Jackson will start next Friday versus Kansas City. Vikes #1 draft choice, Percy Harvin, didn't play. The Colts looked awful. Peyton Manning played but 6 snaps, 2 three-&-outs & was sacked 3 times. Rookie RB Donald Brown was the lone bright spot for Indianapolis rushing for 60 yards in just 5 carries.
I didn't see the Rams/Jets game(and I damn sure don't want to stay up until 3 AM to watch it) but I saw the highlights & rookie QB Mark Sanchez was 3 of 4 for 88 yards & led the Jets on a touchdown drive.
Sad to report that Giants rookie running back, Andre Brown, ruptured his Achilles tendon in a Friday evening practice. Brown, a 4th round pick from North Carolina State, was running a pass pattern when the injury occurred. He will undergo surgery next week & be lost for the season. He's the fifth player to suffer an Achilles injury during summer training camps, I can't remember this many in recent years.
