THIS & THAT..........THE LATE TUESDAY EDITION

There could be numerous big losers in the Vikings' signing of Brett Favre. One is quite obvious, Tavaris Jackson, who was scheduled to start against Kansas City on Friday. He was being shopped around the league by Minnesota brass this morning. Oh, how quickly things can change. Viking head coach Brad Childress went "all in" with this move after repeatedly saying last month "we've closed the book on Brett Favre ever playing here. There's no way we would ever consider signing Brett Favre. He decided to move on & so have we." If the Vikes don't go deep into the playoffs & Favre is 'one & done', Childress is back to square one without a franchise QB & the rest of the team is another year older. Owner Ziggy Wilf may never again take such a risk, the Vikings are paying Favre $12 million for a 1-year deal. Lastly & least importantly to me, Favre's legacy could be so trashed by season's end it could be nearly unfixable. I loved Favre for years, but the last two years have been so annoying, he no longer is that special to me. I would venture a guess that reaction is held by millions of fans. The apparent vendetta he carries for the Packer organization borders on pathetic. The November 1st game in Green Bay will be the most hyped game of the season, providing Favre is healthy enough to start. I thought the December 6th Falcon home game versus the Eagles would be the over-hype game, no way now. Think Michael Vick & the entire Raider organization wasn't thrilled to be put on the back burner for a few days because of this Favre deal?

Two notable injuries in the NFL; Cincinnati quarterback Carson Palmer sustained a moderate high ankle sprain & will be out for at least 10 days, possibly 3 weeks. This is quite a blow to the Bengals who lost Palmer last season with an elbow tendon injury. Oakland Raider wide receiver, Chaz Schilens, broke a bone in his foot & is out for at least 4 weeks. If surgery is required, he could miss up to 10 weeks. Schilens was a 7th round pick in '08 out of San Diego State. He had been having a terrific camp & there was little doubt he was going to start.

Tampa Bay lost the cornerstone of their defense, free safety Tanard Jackson, to a league-imposed 4-game suspension in accordance with the substance abuse policy. The Bucs are a bad team with a rookie head coach & losing their best defensive player, only solidifies their position near the bottom of the NFC.

Oregon visits Boise State on September 3rd to open the college football season & Boise State has now lost 2 of their defensive tackles for several games. Greg Grimes is out 4-6 weeks with an undisclosed leg injury & Michael Atkinson was suspended for 3 games. Both are redshirt freshman & were being counted on to play in the Bronco D-line rotation. Their  DT depth for the first few weeks is almost non-existent.

Also injured was USC center Kristopher O'Dowd. The all-America candidate dislocated his patella for the second time & will miss at least 3 weeks & probably their trip September 12th to Ohio State. I'm not saying anything, but first it was the trophy over the weekend, now O'Dowd. Sort of weird.

Today's real name of the day: Nu'Keese Richardson, wide receiver, Tennessee.
