MY THOUGHTS ON FAVRE'S RETURN & THE FUTURE OF THIS SITE

After watching Favre's press conference, I must say I bought into most everything he had to say. I was impressed with how humble he seemed. He spoke in very hushed tones, none of the big smiles he's known for. There was no opening statement, he just walked to the podium & said "questions?" I believed his sincerity, his dismissal of the so-called "Packer grudge". His explanation of successful bicep surgery & of a slight tear of his right rotator cuff, discovered during that surgery. His discussions with former players & coaches who he looked to for advice. Thru the entire 30-minute stint at the podium, Favre appeared very credible to me, he made it clear winning is the reason for his return. He misses the feeling, he doesn't want to be sorry he didn't try one more time. He made it clear his legacy was never a concern. His total familiarity with the Viking offense made the choice of this particular team that much easier. The fact that the Vikings have a superior defense & the best running back in the league also factored into the decision. Duh. But in the end, it was always about competing & winning.

Once the word got out Tuesday morning that Favre was coming to Minneapolis, the Vikings sold almost 2,000 season tickets by news conference time. They sold over 6,000 single game tickets. That's over $2 million in ticket sales today. John David Booty, Minnesota's 3rd string QB, who wears #4, not only lost his number, he might have lost his job. He or Tavaris Jackson will have to go.

The Chiefs play the Vikes in Minneapolis Friday night & Favre is starting. This is a bad spot for the Chiefs, who are in need of a better effort than they gave last Saturday vs Houston. The Metrodome will be sold out, unusual for an exhibition game & the place will be rocking. There will be a ridiculous number of media types in attendance. All distractions for a team that doesn't need any distractions, even without Favre signing today, this was a bad spot for Kansas City. There are some individual matchups I look forward to, but this is unfortunate timing for a Chiefs' team that is a long way from playing on a level with Minnesota. I fear this could be worse than last week, even without the downpour.

I mentioned earlier today I have always been a Favre fan. But the media crush that surrounds him & his every move annoy the hell out of me. Every day it's "Favre did this" & "Favre might do that", right?  For more than 4 months, it's been Favre, Vick, Plaxico & T.O. on seemingly every episode of "Sportscenter" & "NFL Live". Same for "NFL Total Access" on NFL Network. I guess I should be glad the mainstream sports networks & websites have decided to base most of their coverage around these four players. The number of hits on this site have increased so dramatically in the last few weeks, that even this optomist has been shocked.  Thank you very much for that. I like to think it's because I choose to put this site's focus elsewhere.  My goal is to give you alternative football news, stories you might never hear or see. I stayed away from the 'Michael Vick's 1st-practice-countdown' & as much Favre speculation as I could dodge. You can get this news anywhere or anytime. It bores me to a great extent, even tho it involves the greatest game, football.  Doesn't it seem that a lot of sports reporting today is like watching "Entertainment Tonight" or "Headline News"? Same stories over & over & over. More stories about an athlete's reality show than his performance on the field. Do you want to know who's dating who?  I hope not, it's not where I want to take this site. My goal is to give you current & accurate information,  strong opinion & some laughs along the way. I hope you'll come along.
