THIS & THAT..........THURSDAY
The Seattle Seahawks have 2 of their Pro Bowl players in the trainers room & not on the practice field. Left offensive tackle Walter Jones may need an additional arthroscopic procedure to his left knee that underwent microfracture surgery in the off season. Jones, the long time LT starter & 9-time Pro Bowl performer, is sidelined indefinitely. Cornerback Marcus Trufant, who has a disc issue with his back, has yet to practice since camp began. He was placed on the active/PUP(physically unable to perform) list since before camp began. The 5-year veteran has started every game since he was drafted #1 out of Washington State in 2003, but that string appears near the end. Jones & Trufant had been designated as Seattle's franchise players multiple times, but both were under long term contracts in '09.
The Miami Dolphins continue to sell off tiny pieces of the franchise to celebrities. Yesterday, the Williams sisters, Venus & Serena, joined singers Marc Anthony, Jimmy Buffet & Gloria Estefan, in becoming Dolphin minority owners. The sisters were born & raised in L.A. but have lived in Coral Gables Florida for several years & claim to be diehard phish phans.
For all of you ex-Eagle fans out there, you should know you have a corporate supporter in your corner regarding Michael Vick. According to CNBC this morning, Dick's Sporting Goods has refused to carry any Eagle jerseys with a #7 on them unless the name is on the back is Jaworski. Dick's Sporting Goods operates over 400 stores in 40 states & this decision is chain-wide.
Tampa Bay cornerback & part time thug, Aqib Talib, is in trouble again. Talib was arrested around 6 AM in Tampa & charged with misdemeanor assault & resisting arrest. Talib got into an argument with a cab driver, the cab driver called police, Talib refused to be cuffed, so shortly, he was on his way to jail. This guy is becoming a real problem for rookie head coach Raheem Morris. Last spring during mini camp he got into a scuffle with teammate Donald Penn & cracked Penn in the face with his helmet, opening a large gash. He got into a fist fight, while at the NFL Rookie Symposium in '07, with Tampa teammate Cory Byrd. He has been fined by the Bucs several times & before he was drafted, Jayhawk coaches told any NFL scout or coach who would listen, Talib had failed multiple tests for marijuana. Morris may have to take a stand with Talib, who isn't popular in the locker room, or risk losing the respect of many members of that locker room.
The Illinois defense took a major hit today when it was announced that starting cornerback Miami Thomas will miss the '09 season. He suffered an ACL tear that will require surgery. He missed last season with an ACL tear to his other knee, got it rehabbed in time to return for spring practice only to injure his shoulder, which required yet another surgery. Before the '08 season, Thomas was rated nearly as high as '08 1st round draft pick Vontae Davis, also from Illinois. Now it's questionable if he'll ever play at that level again.
Today's real name of the day: Wave Ryder, safety, Kamehameha High School, Hawaii. Highly touted prospect, the son of 2 surfers.
