THIS & THAT...........SUNDAY MORNING EDITION
I told you yesterday about Jerry's 'Jones Mahal' & its' low-hanging video boards that were used for target practice by Tennessee Titan punters Friday night. Well, the NFL apparently isn't wasting any time resolving the problem. Though Jerry Jones defiantly said Friday the boards wouldn't be raised, it looks as though they're going to get hoisted even higher than the 90' they currently rest above the playing surface. Jones said it would cost $2 million to raise the video boards. He also said the NFL approved the stadium's plans, with the boards in their current location, so if they are to be moved, he isn't paying for it. I'm not a Jones fan, but if the NFL did indeed approve his plans & now they want them raised, they ought to pay for it.
As a Mizzou fan, I had to smile tonight as Chase Daniel led the Washington Redskins to a comeback victory. Long after the starters had departed, Daniel threw two 2nd half touchdown passes for Washington. Daniel was 6 of 8 for 58 yards. He is currently locked in a battle for a roster spot with Todd Collins & Colt Brennan for the backup quarterback spots.
The embattled coach of the Oakland Raiders, Tom Cable, got a double dose of bad news Saturday night in their game with cross-Bay rival, San Francisco. Niner starting RB Frank Gore only played 2 series, but his backups ran roughshod over the Raiders. Rookie Glen Coffee had 129 yards on just 16 carries, Michael Robinson carried 14 times for 97 yards & rookie Kory Sheets had 51 yards & a touchdown on 12 carries. This had to make Niner coach Mike Singletary smile to be able to run the ball & play defense like an old Bear team. Shaun Hill has emerged as the front runner to become the starting QB over Alex Smith. Cable's second dose of bad news came when Raider middle linebacker, Kirk Morrison, the leagues 5th leading tackler, suffered a dislocated elbow in the first quarter. He will miss at least 2 weeks. Makes a guy want to punch an assistant coach huh?
Steeler quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, injured his ankle or foot, he & the club aren't saying which, this past Thursday. He didn't play in Saturday's game at Washington. How long he will be sidelined is unknown. In the Redskin game, #3 QB, Dennis Dixon sustained a separated shoulder & he could be out for a couple of weeks. Only #2 man, Charlie Batch is healthy.
Fantasy fans pay attention. Jacksonville's Troy Williamson, a 3 year bust with the Vikings, is making the most of his second chance with the Jags. He had dropped pass issues in Minnesota & was released. The Jags, in dire straits for a speed receiver, took a chance & it looks to be an excellent choice. Coach Jack Del Rio said Williamson hasn't had any problems catching the ball since he's been in camp. Last week he had 4 catches for 74 yards & Saturday night he snagged 3 passes for a whopping 147 yards & a TD. For a guy once thought of as a warm body looking for a 2nd chance & a roster spot, it appears now he will start opposite new Jaguar, Tory Holt, giving QB David Garrard a pair of formidable receivers.
Oh those rookie quarterbacks, they can be like a roller coaster ride. Detroit rookie & overall #1 pick in the draft, Matthew Stafford, got his first start Saturday. He looked pretty decent last Saturday versus the Falcons. But that was last Saturday. He looked very "rookielike" against the Cleveland Browns. He was 5 of 13 for just 34 yards & he threw an interception. The Browns ran out to a 20-0 lead in the 1st quarter on the strength of a Josh Cribbs 84-yard punt return & 2 Phil Dawson field goals. Later in the 3rd quarter, Browns rookie James Davis scored on an 81-yard run. QB Derrick Anderson, in a battle with Brady Quinn for the starting job, had a decent night in spite of throwing a pick.
Kyle Orton redeemed himself, sort of, in Denver's contest at Seattle. He threw a touchdown & after driving the Broncos to the Seattle 1-yard line he made a throw that probably made everyone in the state of Colorado cringe. Blitzed & flushed from the pocket, he rolled left & as his right arm was grabbed, he moved the ball to his left hand & lofted a wobbly pass into an endzone containing 6 Seahawk defenders & only one Bronco. Intercepted....it was ugly. Matt Hasselback looked to be in mid-season form throwing for 2 touchdowns & 173 yards in the first half. Bronco backup QB Chris Simms might have sustained an injured knee or ankle when hit in the pocket, it looked like Tom Brady's hit last season, but I haven't been able to find anything on it as of yet.
Nebraska coach Bo Pelini dismissed RB Quentin Castille from the team Saturday. The 6-1 235-pound junior was competing with Dan Helu Jr. for the starting spot. Castille ran for 467 yards & 6 touchdowns splitting time with Helu & departed Marlon Lucky in '08. Pelini's reason for the dismissal was the pat "violation of team rules".
Today's real name of the day; Zebric Sanders, offensive tackle, Florida State.
