THIS & THAT............LATE MONDAY EDITION
ESPN's Adam Schefter said tonight Matt Cassel would be ready to start in Baltimore opening day, I have my doubts. Schefter also said Zach Thomas was going to retire or possibly take an injury buyout from the Chiefs. Since he never practiced in pads, never scrimmaged or dressed for a game, I question just how sincere his desire to play really was. Could it be possible after observing training camp & the 3 preseason games, he decided he didn't need the aggravation of playing for such a dysfunctional team. You know, something like "I don't need this crap."
The Bengals put their 2nd tight end on injured reserve, Ben Utecht along with Reggie Kelly are both lost for the season. Former Mizzou Tiger, Chase Coffman, is the clubhouse leader with 13 days to go. I've heard he gets an ass chewin' about every week on HBO's "Hard Knocks, Training Camp with the Cincinnati Bengals". Regardless, he has the softest hands of any tight end I've ever seen & I expect him to have some impact this season.
Tom Brady was on a Boston-area radio program Monday & said he'd be able to start the Pats first game versus Buffalo on Monday night. When asked if he was injured, Brady responded "did you see the 350-pound defensive guy land right on top of me? If you play this game even once, you get hurt, you're sore, but you play, like I'm gonna play. Realistically, you're seldom at 100%." Apparently he is slightly injured, don't look for him in their final preseason game against the Giants Thursday night.
The Chargers lost rookie Brandon Hughes, a cornerback who was expected to get major playing time this season, to what Norv Turner is calling "a significant knee injury. We won't have Hughes for quite a while". The 5th round pick from Oregon had a good camp & his playing time had increased with every preseason game.
Did you catch the Viking/Texan game tonight? Adrian Peterson takes a Favre hand off on the first play of the game & goes untouched 75 yards for a touchdown. Texan QB Matt Schaub, who can't stay healthy, injured his ankle on a scramble & didn't return. Favre played into the 3rd quarter & with Percy Harvin in the Wildcat & Favre lined up as a wide receiver, Favre attempted a crack back block on Texan safety Eugene Wilson. Favre hit him below the knees, a 15-yard penalty this year & Wilson buckled in pain. I don't think 40-year old QBs ought to be blocking on the perimeter, luckily, neither appeared to be hurt. Remember just 3 years ago when the Texans drafted Mario Williams ahead of Reggie Bush & Vince Young & the national media laughed out loud at the Texans. Well who's laughing now? Young's on the bench, Bush can't stay in the lineup & all Williams does is make plays. He's had a sack in each of the preseason games, had 12 last season along with 6 forced fumbles. I must admit I thought Young was the pick over Williams back then, but I was never a Reggie Bush guy.
Many in the media refer to Bill Belichick as "the hoodie" for the hooded sweatshirt with the cutoff sleeves he wears nearly all season. Denver's new head coach Josh McDaniel, formerly Belichick's offensive coordinator, wore a hoodie last night when his Broncos played the Bears. His new nickname is "hoodie lite".
I told you yesterday about Mizzou right tackle Dan Hoch & how important it was for him to be back in the Tiger lineup for Saturday's opener with Illinois. Well The Columbia Missourian reported tonight that Hoch had been running without pain Sunday & was back at full steam in Monday's practice. Coach Gary Pinkel said Hoch would start Saturday & Kurtis Gregory would return to his right guard position.
I honestly take no pleasure in the bad karma that has befallen the USC Trojans & their head coach Pete "I wish I'd never said what I said on media day" Carroll. Just Saturday I reported another serious injury to a Trojan starter. Thankfully, today I won't be reporting on an injury, but that darn karma has struck again. Shareece Wright, the Trojans' #1 cornerback, was declared academically ineligible for the 2009 season. His summer school grades were finally posted & as Carroll said "Shareece didn't get it done, he didn't study hard enough". Well Shareece certainly has plenty of study time now, because he can't play until next season, provided his grades improve. USC had 12 starters returning for this season, the key word is 'had'. Now they've lost 5 of those returning starters. I'm guessing Pete Carroll will keep his predictions of Trojan invincibility to himself from now on.
Today's real name of the day; JerQuan Schofield, offensive lineman, Tennessee.
