WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON OVER AT 1 ARROWHEAD DRIVE?
The Chiefs have an injured quarterback & starting cornerback, a porous offensive line, only 1 wide receiver worth talking about & after this morning's goings-on, Chiefs fans have to wonder what the hell is going on over at 1 Arrowhead Drive? This morning the Chiefs announced Chan Gailey has been relieved of his duties as offensive coordinator. The statement didn't say he was fired, so are we to believe Gailey will hang around in a diminished capacity?
No replacement for Gailey was announced. PFT.com's Mike Florio & ESPN's John Clayton both believe it could be Maurice Carthon, already on the staff. Will Todd Haley, who certainly has a bunch of distractions right now, appoint himself to the position he's very familiar with? I hope not, the challenge of making this offense more competitive is a 24-hour a day job, distractions can't be a part of it.
Could it be when Scott Pioli & Todd Haley took their respective jobs, they underestimated just how bad the overall talent level was in Kansas City? Or maybe they knew how bad it was, but didn't feel like trashing Clark Hunt's team in public as a collection of stiffs, for the most part. For six months(check the archives), I've said the Chiefs had only 18-20 NFL quality players(out of a 53-man roster), there were even fewer who's skill sets could make them viable in the offensive & defensive schemes Haley planned to implement. So realistically, before free agency & the draft, the Chiefs had maybe, I said maybe, 13 NFL quality players who could play in these schemes. And tho I think it was the right thing to do, they traded the best one of all, Tony Gonzalez.
On the injury front, I think Matt Cassel will miss at least 2 regular season games with his sprained MCL & ankle. The exact nature of Brandon Flowers' shoulder injury is unknown, but the Chiefs will certainly miss him if he is sidelined for even one game. I don't want to sound like heartless creep, but the loss of Devard Darling shouldn't affect this ineffective offense one way or another.
Todd Haley is expected to speak at Arrowhead sometime after 1 PM & I'll give you an update as to what he has to say about a new O-coordinator & the injury list.
