PATRIOTS TRADE SEYMOUR, RAIDERS PAY TOO MUCH....AGAIN
Sunday, the New England Patriots traded 5-time Pro Bowl defensive end, Richard Seymour, to the Oakland Raiders. Whew, talk about going from the penthouse to the outhouse. The Pats will receive the Raiders' 1st round draft pick in the 2011 draft. Seymour, a 9-year veteran with three Super Bowl rings. will become a free agent at the end of the 2009 season. What is going on in Oakland? They didn't get a contract extension done with Seymour before the trade, now he can walk away from Oakland at the end of the season & they're still out the #1 pick in '11. Not a smart move, but then the Raiders have been making a lot of dumb moves for well over a decade, it's why they're where they are. They didn't get called the "biggest clown car" in the league for no reason.
One of the reasons the Patriots traded Seymour is they had both he & nose tackle Vince Wilfork facing free agency after this season & they knew they couldn't satisfy the contract demands of both players. Wilfork is 3 years younger than Seymour plus the Raiders wanted Seymour, he fits their defensive scheme better altho he hasn't played in a conventional 4-3 defense since he became a pro. I would imagine he'll play left defensive tackle. The Raiders run defense hasn't been anything to brag about & with middle linebacker Kirk Morrison's injury, it only looks to get worse. They hope Seymour can help.
Isn't it amazing the turnover in the New England defense from a team that went to the Super Bowl just 18 months ago. Seymour, Mike Vrabel, & Ellis Hobbs have all been traded & Rodney Harrison & Tedy Bruschi retired. Quite a turnover, but I think Bill Belichick would rather send a guy packing a season too early than a season too late. The got a 1st round pick for Seymour, next year it might have dropped to a 3rd.
The Patriots also cut quarterback Kevin O'Connell last week, look for them to bring in A.J. Feeley, cut by the Eagles on Saturday, for a look-see.
