EXTENSIVE INJURY LIST & OTHER NOTES

The carnage was extensive over the weekend & it begins with Bears middle linebacker Brian Urlacher, the heart & soul of Chicago's defense, will be lost for the season after undergoing surgery to repair a dislocated wrist he sustained in last night's game with the Packers. This is a devastating loss, in his 10-years with the bears, Urlacher has missed 7 games to injury, the Bears lost all 7. This wasn't the only bad news for the Bear defense, starting strongside linebacker, Pisa Tinoisamoa suffered a sprained MCL & he will be sidelined for 2-4 weeks. Head coach Lovie Smith has already contacted ex-Buccaneer all-pro Derrick Brooks & he will be in Chicago this evening to work out for the Bears. Former starter, Hunter Hillenmeyer will likely step in for Urlacher, Brooks or possibly another candidate, will fill in for Tinoisamoa.

Donovan McNabb may try to play Sunday versus the Saints in spite of his broken rib. Coach Andy Reid said today McNabb is so experienced in this offense he could go without practicing if need be. He would then have a shot to deaden the pain so he could take the deep breathes required to play. Don't count him out, he's very tough.

From the same game, Panther backup quarterback, Luke McCown, sustained a serverely sprained foot & was put on injured reserve this afternoon & will be lost for the season. McCown was acquired recently by Carolina from Tampa Bay to backup Delhomme(Delhomme is Cajun for turnover). Now with McCown gone & a very shaky Delhomme, the Panthers need to find a veteran backup QB very quickly.

Colt starting wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez hurt his knee yesterday & will be lost for 2-6 weeks. While in college, Gonzalez lived & slept in a room that was pressurized to an altitude of something like 10,000 feet, in an effort to gain lung capacity & stamina. So he will go to extremes in an effort to play & play well.

Giant wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, a rookie, sustained a foot sprain in yesterday's Redskin game. He returned to the sideline with his foot in a protective boot. An MRI today revealed nothing more than a strained ligament in his left foot. Nicks is expected to miss 2-3 weeks.

From the college injury list, Georgia got a double whammy, losing offensive tackle Trinton Sturdivant & defensive tackle Rod Battle for the season. Both suffered torn ACL's & will undergo surgery this week.

UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince took a real shot in the mouth near the end of Saturday's upset win at Tennessee. He walked off the field spitting blood & doctors went to work on him so quickly, it was obvious he had been hurt pretty badly. Prince has a broken jaw & will be lost for 3-4 weeks. His jaw was wired shut on Sunday to speed the healing process. Who will start for the Bruins this Saturday against Kansas State hasn't been determined.

Oklahoma State's All-Big-12 running back, Kendall Hunter, sustained a leg injury during the first half of their loss to Houston on Saturday. Cowboy coach Mike Gundy wouldn't reveal the type of injury, but said Hunter was doubtful for the Rice game this Saturday.

Lost in the Panthers blowout loss to Philadelphia was an impressive stat, the Eagles only mustered 267 yards of total offense against the Panther defense. Turnovers, 5 of them, by Carolina quarterback Jake Delhomme, gave the Eagles superior staring field position. Plus DeSean Jackson ran back a punt for a score & Victor Abiamiri returned a Delhomme fumble for a touchdown. Eagle QBs went 17 of 29 for a paltry 82 yards. Thanks go to the Eagle defense that held the Panthers to under 200 yards of offense & Delhomme of course for stinking up the place.

The Buffalo Bills intend to utilize their no huddle offense tonight against the Patriots. They have a starting offensive line with 2 rookies at the guard spots & a new left tackle that has never played in an NFL game. This line was awful in the preseason, in 15 possessions they managed 1 field goal, that's it. The Bills are a team "the experts" had contending for a playoff spot just 3 months ago. I think this is the first potential meltdown of the season. This isn't a good team, they're in the 'bottom 8" with Tampa Bay, Detroit, St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, Oakland & Cleveland.

The Dallas Cowboys won yesterday, defeating the Buccaneers 34-21. Looking a little deeper  into this game, I think the Cowboys should be concerned going into their next game with the New York Giants, the grand opening of the Jones-Mahal in Arlington Texas. The Bucs ran for 174 yards & passed for 276. Could the loss of Zach Thomas, Chris Canty & Greg Ellis, all front 7 defenders, be the cause? The Cowboys were pushed around & the Bucs certainly aren't the Giants. Both line for the G-Men are amongst the very best in the league & they are physical. Poor communication in the defensive backfield were the cause of 2 of the 3 long touchdown passes the Cowboys popped yesterday.

St. Louis rookie middle linebacker James Laurinaitis made an impressive debut yesterday in spite of the Rams 28-0 loss. Laurinaitis made 14 tackles, one for a loss & a fumble recovery.

Denver rookie Knowshon Moreno had a less than spectacular NFL debut yesterday at Cincinnati. He carried the ball 8 times for only 19 yards. He also left the game twice with a lower leg issue. Also from the game I said was the luckiest(for Denver anyway) ending I had ever seen, it was the longest winning play in the last 2 minutes in NFL history. WR Brandon Stokley caught a tipped pass out of the air & went 87-yards for the winning score with 11-seconds left. Another note concerning the self proclaimed 'King of Twitter', Chad Ochocinco. I said last week Chad should be more concerned with playing better football & less about being a cool Twitter guy. In yesterday's game, Ochocinco was flagged for holding after Cedric Benson ran 14-yards for a 1st down at the Denver 33. Later he was penalized for offensive pass interference on a 23-yard gain on 3rd down in Denver territory. Both times the Bengals were forced to punt. C'mon Chad, put the I-Phone down.

Today's real name of the day; Maudrecus Humphrey, wide receiver, Hoover High School, Hoover, Alabama.
