JUST LIKE A CLASSIC WAC GAME FROM THE 70'S

Watching tonight's Boise State-Fresno State game reminded me of WAC games of old, like the 1970's & 80's. Back in the days of Lavell Edwards, Frank Kush, Don Coryell, Jim McMahon, Isaac Curtis, Brian Sipe, Danny White & Gifford Nielsen, Western Athletic Conference games were marked by wild offensive shows, very little defense & they were the first conference to schedule Friday night games under the lights.

The game tonight had it all, 85 points, 987 total offensive yards & 8 plays over 60-yards. If you're a fan of defensive football, this wasn't your game. I like great defensive football & I loved this one too. The game, won by #10 Boise State 51-34, had everything except a blocked punt or a punt return for a TD. Boise State had a 102-yards kickoff return called back on a holding penalty, after the penalty was accessed, Doug Martin ran back the next kickoff 77-yards. Teammate Titus Young also returned a kickoff 77-yards. Boise's running back Jeremy Avery had 11 carries for 186 yards, a 74-yard run & he took a screen pass 67-yards for a touchdown. His backfield mate, D.J. Harper had 107 yards on 12 carries & he had the 2nd shortest touchdown of the game, a 30-yard run. Safety Winston Venable made several huge plays including an interception return for a touchdown.

Fresno State's Ryan Mathews had 3 touchdown runs of 60, 68 & 69, 234 yards on just 19 carries. It was truly an old-time WAC game, complete with sloppy tackling & missed assignments. A lot of defensive & special team players will be horrified when they watch the game films tomorrow.

Mizzou travels to Reno next Friday to play Nevada in this ESPN time slot.
