WEEKEND LEFTOVERS & MORE CHIEFS' OBSERVATIONS
Some big-name college players went down with injuries on Saturday. South Florida QB Matt Grothe suffered a torn ACL & will be lost for the season. This should effectively end the Bulls push for a fifth straight bowl appearance. Notre Dame wide receiver Michael Floyd sustained a broken clavicle in Saturday's game with Michigan State. He underwent surgery today & will most likely be out for the season. Floyd was rounding into a very promising pass catcher, he is quick enough, has size & excellent athletic ability. A major loss for the Irish. Cal WR Nyan Boateng suffered a broken foot in Saturday's game with Minnesota & had surgery to insert a pin. Boateng was the Golden Bears leading receiver & he will miss 4-6 weeks, one of those Cal's October 3rd showdown with USC, which could determine the PAC-10 champion.
Kansas running back Jake Sharp left the Jayhawks game with Duke early on with an undetermined injury he had sustained Thursday in practice. He carried only 5 times for 13 yards & then left the game. With Southern Miss, Iowa State & Colorado on the upcoming schedule, Sharp will be missed, but with all the fire power the 'Hawks have, they should prevail even without him.
Oklahoma middle linebacker Mike Balogun has been ruled ineligible to play anymore for the Sooners by the NCAA. Balogun had played semi-pro football after high school & before walking on at OU. Balogun started 8 games last season replacing injured starter Ryan Reynolds.
I neglected to mention Saturday night some of my thoughts about the Tennessee-Florida showdown. I saw a good gameplan out of Lane & Monte Kiffin, they hung in, knowing they probably couldn't win but it was a gameplan that really frustrated the Gator & their leader, Tim Tebow. I saw a Florida defense with 2 high 1st round draft picks in DE Carlos Dunlap & ILB Brandon Spikes. I saw Tennessee run right at them successfully. They stayed off the perimeter, not allowing Florida to use the speed advantage in pursuit. Tebow didn't have a good game throwing the ball, his first without a TD pass in the last 31 games. The Gators running backs were ineffective & the wide receivers made almost zero impact, the receiving leader had 26 yards. Monte Kiffin may have given the rest of the SEC a blueprint to beat Florida. Like USC, this edition of the Gators doesn't compare favorably with other teams of the Urban Meyer era.
Word on the street is Seattle quarterback Matt Hasselbeck has a broken rib. He was hospitalized overnight after collapsing right after their 23-10 loss at San Francisco. Atlanta defensive tackle Peria Jerry was carted off the field yesterday & if the rookie misses any time, it could severely impact the Falcons playoff hopes. Jerry was providing Atlanta with good inside pass rush pressure & was making plays in run defense as well. The extent of his leg injury isn't known at this time.
The San Francisco Forty-Niners have filed a formal complaint against the Jets for tampering with 1st round draft pick, the unsigned Michael Crabtree. The Niners claim in their complaint the Jets contacted Eugene Parker, Crabtree's agent & told him they would pay what the holdout wide receiver is requesting. Crabtree is quickly approaching a point where his returns won't justify the investment to get him signed. He's just too far behind everyone else & by the time he can realistically be ready to play, it will be week 10 or 11. What a mess this kid has made of his football future, it's a shame. But the bottom line is, it's his decision to go in this direction.
I picked this gem off Martin Manley's blog, the Chiefs had out gained their opponent by 240 yards in 15 games thru their history. They had won 14 straight until yesterday. Thank you Martin, it just reinforces what I said last night.
I thought Larry Johnson earned every single yard he got yesterday, 119 total yards, he looked like the LJ of old. He ran angry. Plus I liked it when he got the ball outside on swing passes, something the Edwards regime refused to do.
I swear on a stack of Bibles, I said to Linda 20 seconds before Matt Cassel threw a touchdown pass to Dwayne Bowe, "Nnamdi Asomugha has been in the locker room with dehydration, he's back on the sideline, why haven't they gone up top to Bowe in the endzone?" If I can make observations like this in my TV bunker, why can't Chiefs' coaches(Todd Haley)do the same?
A very good source at Arrowhead told me the reason running back Jamal Charles wasn't active for yesterday's game was he was tardy. On game days, players are required to be in the locker room by 9 AM & about 10:45, Charles came racing in to find himself placed on the inactive list.
