GABBERT'S STOCK CONTINUES TO RISE......PLUS MORE

Missouri sophomore quarterback, Blaine Gabbert, led the Tigers to a 4-0 record Friday night against Nevada, 31-21. Gabbert was 25 of 40 for 414 yards & 3 touchdowns. Equally important, Gabbert has thrown 148 passes without an interception. He improves every game. Twice he used his size & his feet to get loose in the pocket, keeping the play alive & then completed long passes downfield. When he runs, he needs to lower his shoulder, twice he was slammed down by smaller players using textbook tackling form. Big test on the horizon October 8th versus Nebraska. That game will be in Columbia telecast nationally on ESPN. Wide receiver Danario Alexander had a huge night, 9 catches for 169 yards & 2 TDs. Mizzou's O-line is going to have to step up their play considerably for Nebraska, who has a great defensive front. The Tigers need to be able to run the ball for at 100 yards to keep the Cornhuskers from just teeing off & coming after Gabbert. Redshirt freshman defensive end Aldon Smith had another productive start with a sack & 2 tackles for a loss. He has a sack in every game this season.

ESPN reported tonight Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford was scheduled to meet with Dr. James Andrews, probably the most highly regarded sports orthopedist in the country. Bradford had begun some light throwing earlier in the week. Is he getting better or worse?

I'm looking at the Southern Miss-Kansas game Saturday. KU opened as a 13 1/2 point favorite. Fights between the Jayhawk basketball & football teams makes me wonder if there is a distraction factor for the home team. Listening to coaches Bill Self & Mark Mangino, it's very apparent they are furious with their players. Leading rusher Jake Sharp is questionable for the Jayhawks, the depth chart drop off is considerable. Southern Miss is 3-0 & still alive in the 'BCS Buster' field. Winning this game would be huge for their program. I don't see them winning, but I believe they can cover. If the line holds tomorrow, the Golden Eagles will be a play.

The other possibility is Oregon. The Ducks could go a long way to salvage both their reputation & their season with a win over the Cal Bears in Autzon Stadium Saturday afternoon. Cal could be looking ahead to next Saturday's big matchup with USC, which could decide the PAC-10 title. Cal will also be without their leading receiver, Nyan Boateng, who broke his foot last Saturday against Minnesota. The home-standing Ducks are a 5 1/2 point underdog & if that number holds, I'll take a shot with Oregon.
