MANY RANKED LOSERS & TEBOW HOSPITALIZED AFTER K.O.
Another tough days for ranked teams. Added to #4 Ole MIss' loss on Thursday, #5 Penn State, #6 Cal, #9 Miami, #18 Florida State, #22 North Carolina & #24 Washington all went down. Narrowly escaping upset were #7 LSU, they stopped Mississippi State 3 times inside the 1-yard line with less than a minute to play. The Houston Cougars should improve on their #17 ranking after they scored with 44-seconds left to hold off Texas Tech. Georgia, #21 team in the AP Poll, kicked a field goal on the game's last play to nip Arizona State 20-17. Michigan won another heart stopper over Indiana in the closing 2 minutes, 36-33.
Penn State's quarterback Daryll Clark was awful in the driving rain at Happy Valley. He threw three interceptions, lost a fumble, his play was really disappointing Iowa seems to have JoePa's number, beating the Nittany Lions 7 of the last 8. Penn State threw a 79-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the game, after that I wonder if they had a total of 100 yards of offense. The Hawkeyes also blocked a punt that was returned for a touchdown. If their schedule wasn't so tough, I'd say they would probably win the Big-10, but I think we're destined to watch Ohio State(aaarrrrrrggggh!) in another BCS Bowl Game, not the championship mind you, but a BCS game.
The California Bears-Oregon Ducks game was the "Perfect Storm". Cal was flying high from their big win last Saturday & they might have been looking ahead to their game with USC next Saturday. Oregon was looking for redemption & they found it by smoking the Bears 42-3. The Ducks out gained Cal 524-207. That's really ugly. I predicted this exact thing yesterday right here, in fact I put my money where my mouth was.
Miami proved to be "Not ready for prime time" after absorbing a 31-7 beatdown at the hands of Virginia Tech. This game was also played in monsoon-like conditions, but it didn't seem to affect the Hokies. They ran for 272 yards while holding the 'Canes to 59 yards on 34 carries.
Florida State continued their roller coaster ride, the buried BYU last week & today they were beaten at home by South Florida & a quarterback who had never started. Pretty sad effort. Sorry Ed, but it's true.
Purdue called a timeout with 29-seconds left in their game because they apparently wanted to give Notre Dame a better chance to win. The Irish obliged them, scoring a TD with 25 seconds left to win 24-21. Notre Dame had no timeouts, they were facing a 3rd & goal at the 4-yard line & they appeared to be in panic mode. No problem, the Boilermakers called a timeout allowing the Irish to regroup. They threw an incompletion on 3rd down, but on 4th down, a limping Jimmy Clausen fired the winning touchdown to tight end Kyle Rudolph. I didn't get it.
Matt Barkley returned to USC & they outlasted a horrible Washington State team 27-6. The Trojans jumped out 20-0, then they began coasting, this team is far from what they once were. They keep repeating the same old mistakes, turnovers & 13 penalties, pretty sloppy.
I'd like an explanation from Coach 'Sweatervest' (Jim Tressell) as to why he had his Buckeyes throw passes on 3rd & goal & 4th & goal leading 23-0 with a minute left in the game? They scored on the 4th down attempt. Where was this meanstreak when Ohio State played USC? He showed almost no backbone whatsoever versus the Trojans. Yesterday, playing a far inferior team, he suddenly gets a killer instinct? Bullsh#t.
In answer to my question regarding Sam Bradford's reason for seeing Dr. Andrews. He wants a clearance to play next Saturday against Miami.
I freely admit I hate Kansas, but I love the wide receiving duo of Dezmon Briscoe & Kerry Meier. Meier caught 2 touchdowns, including the game winner, as the Jayhawks prevailed over Southern Miss, 35-28. As I predicted, the Golden Eagles made a game of it, tied 28-all entering the 4th quarter, thereby covering the 13 1/2 points.
Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner, was hospitalized after sustaining what is believed to be a concussion in their blowout win over Kentucky. Tebow went into the game with a respiratory virus that also affected several of his teammates. In the 3rd quarter, with the Gators leading 34-7, Tebow was leveled by defensive end Taylor Wyndham & as Tebow fell backwards with Wyndham on top of him, the back of his head was slammed forward after striking the knee of one of his offensive linemen. He lay motionless for about 10 minutes as 67,000 people went absolutely silent. He was finally led from the field & as they put him on a cart he began vomiting into a barf bag on the way to the ambulance. Can someone explain to me why your very sick star quarterback is still in a game you lead 34-7 against a team that doesn't have 100-yards of offense & truly isn't able to get out of their own way? Tebow is as tough as they come at that position, but there's no earthly reason for him to be in the game at that point.
