CHIEFS HAVE A NEW STARTER & MIZZOU CELL PHONE DEBACLE

In an effort to find someone capable of staying in his stance until the snap, knock a defender off the ball on running plays & keep pass rushers off their quarterback without holding, Todd Haley has named a new starter at right tackle. Ryan O'Callaghan, formerly of the Patriots(anybody see a trend here?), will take over the right tackle spot for the Giants game. Ike Ndukwe had started in the first 3 games, but he was less than effective. O'Callaghan started a few games for New England & I actually liked this guy coming out of Cal in 2006, he's certainly larger than Ndukwe at nearly 6-7 & 328 pounds. He has a bit of a mean streak, something that would be welcome by most Chiefs' fans. Let's hope the revolving door at this position closes. Debuting against the New York Giants makes the task that much tougher. In my opinion, the Giants have the best defensive front in the NFL.

Their intent was good, the execution was embarrassing. The Missouri Tiger athletic department held an auction to sell off some surplus equipment. In that auction was a lot of 25 cell phones used by the football staff. Mike Bellman of Columbia bought the lot for $190. He said he could sell the on eBay for parts for at least 5 times what he paid for them. Imagine Mike's surprise when he charged the batteries on his new phones & found the Tiger staff hadn't wiped the sim cards on these phones clean. Each phone had their phone book intact, 18 of them had numerous text messages that hadn't been erased. When athletic department officials heard of the screwup, they offered to buy the phones back for Bellman for what he paid for them. Yeah, right. Bellman intends to list them on eBay as a sports collectible. He figures he can average $100 a phone. Some Tiger rivals might be interested in some of the info on these phones. How unbelievably stupid was this? I doubt it will cost them a game, but it could hurt them in regards to which recruit's phone numbers might have been in these phones, plus the text messages.

As someone who wagered on the Chicago Bears this past Sunday & watched as the Bears ran 180-pound Garrett Wolfe into the line on a 4th quarter 3rd & 1, I was livid. What in the hell was the coaching staff thinking? Today, Bears' offensive coordinator Ron Turner admitted it was a mistake. He said, "luckily it didn't make the difference in the outcome, but it was a mistake to be sure". Thanks Ron, had it made the difference, I would have felt much better losing the game but having your explanation.

In their biggest game so far, the New Orleans Saints will face off with the 3-0 New York Jets with their 3rd string left offensive tackle as the starter. Zach Strief will replace Jermon Bushrod as starter. Bushrod has ankle & knee injuries that will require a week or two to heal. Bushrod became the starter in the preseason when Pro Bowler Jammal Brown had hip issues & a sports hernia. Brown was placed on I.R. this past Monday.

Think football isn't popular? Last night ESPN carried the Minnesota Twins-Detroit Tigers showdown for the American League Central Division crown. ESPN2 carried the Hawaii-Louisiana Tech game, hardly a great college football game. The baseball game finished second in the ratings for the evening.

The tsunami that struck American Samoa Tuesday has claimed over 100 lives so far. Two members of the Utah football team, Sealver Siliga & Neli A'asa, lost a total of 11 family members in the tragedy. The PAC-10 & Mountain West Conference have recruited players from American Samoa for well over 20 years & both have teams with numerous Samoan players.
