BENGAL BLACKOUT, COLT KICKER KO'D & THE ONLY SURE THING IN VEGAS

Only the "Immaculate Deflection" has kept the Cincinnati Bengals from having a perfect record. In spite of the Bengals 4-1 record, it appears their game with Houston this Sunday will be blacked out. If they are within 1,500 of a sellout, they could apply for an extension on Thursday. Unfortunately, they're "nowhere close" to extension territory. Think this economy hasn't hurt ticket sales around the league? What kind of chances does Cincinnati have of selling out future games with Cleveland & Kansas City? Once again the Chargers are looking to file for an extension for their Monday night game with the 5-0 Denver Broncos. They have until Friday to notify the NFL if they need an extension.

Matthew Stafford, Detroit quarterback, resumed practicing after sitting out a week with a knee injury. It looks like he will play on Sunday at Green Bay. His #1 target, wide receiver Calvin Johnson, didn't practice for the 2nd day in a row, his status is questionable. The Steelers lost 9-year starting defensive end, Aaron Johnson for the season. He was put on I.R. after undergoing successful rotator cuff surgery. The Steelers lead the league in stopping the run & Smith was a major part of that effort. Colts kicker, Adam Vinatieri, will be out for 4-8 weeks after arthroscopic knee surgery today. Indianapolis signed veteran Matt Stover to kick in his absence.

Texas Tech coach Mike Leach won't name his starting quarterback for the Red Raiders trip to Nebraska. Starter Taylor Potts sustained a concussion two weeks ago against New Mexico. He was replaced last week by sophomore Steven Sheffield, who promptly threw for 490 yards & 7 touchdowns versus Kansas State. The word is out down in Lubbock, much of the locker room wants Sheffield. Unless it leaks out, Leach has said he won't name the starter until 2 hours before kickoff in Lincoln.

Not since WKRP was on the air has the city of Cincinnati had such an important primetime TV spot. The #8 Cincinnati Bearcats travel to #21 South Florida tonight for a national TV showdown on ESPN. This should be a very entertaining game. You'll be able to see several future NFL stars in this game, South Florida DE, George Selvie, #95, Cincy's WR-KR Mardy Gilyard, #1 & QB Tony Pike, #15. This is a huge Big East matchup that might go a long way towards deciding the conference champ.

What's the only sure thing in Vegas? How about kicking the hell out of UNLV? The Rebels last 2 opponents, Nevada & BYU, amassed 1,384 yards & 122 points crushing them 63-28 & 59-21. No relief this weekend as Utah comes calling along with 15,000 fans. I doubt the 16 1/2 will be enough for UNLV.

Today's real name of the day: Crezdon Butler, cornerback, Clemson.
