CARROLL WHINING, PELINI PISSED OFF & THE SEC APOLOGIZES

The first BCS Poll came out Sunday evening & it only took a few hours for USC's Pete Carroll to start his yearly whine about his Trojans' spot in the Poll. He wondered "is it the goal to find the team with the best record or the best team?" It appears since his team gags one game per year against an unranked opponent, he has a better shot complaining in the court of public opinion than with the media, pollsters & his sworn enemy, computers. Matt Hayes of The Sporting News calls USC "Team Coulda Woulda Shoulda". Absolutely perfect name for Carroll's Trojans. Pete is a brilliant recruiter, he's a top-notch coach & a quality leader, but he needs to understand that losing year after year to unranked teams will always be counted against you in the polls.

Texas quarterback Colt McCoy suffered an injured thumb on his throwing hand in Saturday's win over OU. Today the thumb was swollen with limited motion. He said the nail was expected to fall off in the next few days. McCoy said he hurt the thumb banging it off an Sooner lineman's helmet in the 1st quarter. He had the worst passing day of his Texas career. McCoy said the thumb wouldn't keep him from playing against Missouri on Saturday night. The game will be televised nationally on ABC.

Let the musical quarterbacks resume at Texas Tech. Steven Sheffield, who filled in the past 2 weeks for starter Taylor Potts, will miss 2-3 weeks with a foot injury. Potts suffered a concussion 3 weeks ago & since then, Sheffield has thrown 8 touchdowns & run for 2 more, leading the Red Raiders to a pair of wins. Potts is expected to be cleared to play before Saturday's matchup with Texas A&M. Tech smothered Kansas State 2 weeks ago 66-14 & last week K-State clobbered A&M 62-14. Think Potts doesn't want back in the lineup against the Aggies?

Things up in Husker Land aren't too great after their loss at home to Texas Tech. I told you Saturday night of the torrent of Boos raining down on the Huskers as they entered the locker room at halftime & how coach Bo Pelini stopped & walked back out the tunnel to see who they were booing. When he figured it was his team, the look on his face wasn't a friendly look. Today at practice he was asked if the booing bothered him & Pelini responded with "Don't care what the fans say or if they boo me or my team. When the fans earn the title of head coach, they can make the decisions." Pelini also said backup QB Cody Green, a true freshman, may start instead of Zac Lee. The Cornhusker offense has sputtered of late, only scoring touchdowns in 2 of the 12 quarters they've played against FBS teams.

The Southeastern Conference sent a letter to Arkansas stating the game officials in their loss at Florida made a mistake on the personal foul call I've been bitching about for three days. They also said the other two calls in question were "a matter of interpretation". In other words, those calls were wrong as well. This is the same crew that called a 15-yard excessive celebration penalty on Georgia wide receiver, A.J. Green, which the SEC also apologized for the Tuesday after that game. It was a ridiculous call as well, maybe the SEC ought to put this crew on suspension for a week or two & maybe they'll stop trying to decide the outcome of games.

Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert's ankle sprain is "no problem" & he'll start Saturday night versus Texas. I bought into this crap last week, tho I didn't bet on the game & then we watched Gabbert hobble all over the field for 4 quarters. I'll have to see it to believe it.

A tragic loss of life occurred on the Connecticut campus Saturday night. Jasper Howard, a starting cornerback, was stabbed to death outside a campus dance in front of two teammates & several other horrified onlookers. Another person was stabbed but they are in satisfactory condition. Howard had just found out he was going to be a father & teammates said he was ecstatic. Police expect to make an arrest very soon. What on earth is a kid doing with a knife at a dance on a college campus. I guess I'm too old, I remember a fight met fists, not knives or guns. A very sad story of inexcusable violence.
