CHIEFS SIGN 2 NT'S, TOO MUCH INJURY NEWS & AFC WEST RACE IS OVER
The Chiefs signed 2 nose tackles today & there's a story on both of them. Kenny Smith was originally drafted by the Saints in 2001 as a 3rd round selection out of Alabama. He started 10 games for New Orleans in 3 seasons, signed with Oakland, but was placed on I.R. for the entire 2005 season. He later signed with Tampa Bay but was cut before the season began & then signed with the Patriots(what a surprise we'd sign a former Patriot), was cut, resigned & the next season was spent on I.R. The Patriots cut him this past August. So this guy hasn't played in a live game in nearly 5 years. The other signee was Marlon Favorite, an undrafted rookie who played last season for.....drum roll please.....LSU, right next to Tyson Jackson. It has become apparent that attending LSU or having some sort of New England connection, will put you on the fast track to be signed by the 1-5 Chiefs. I actually liked Favorite coming out of college. I thought he would go undrafted as he is a limited-area-type of player. The 6-1, 317-pound former Tiger was placed on the practice squad.
There is a lot of injury news & most of it isn't positive. New York Jets NT Kris Jenkins has a blown ACL & will be lost for the season. This is a huge loss for the Jets as Jenkins is probably the most active nose tackle in the league, constantly occupying 2 blockers enables the remaining Jet defenders to make plays & not worry about the middle of the line, Jenkins had it covered. Patriot rookie wide receiver & kick returner, Julian Edelman suffered a broken arm in Sunday's 59-0 blowout of the Titans. How long he'll be out isn't known at this time. Chicago linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa will decide this week if he is to undergo season-ending knee surgery. The former Ram has been injured twice this season, limiting him to less than 3 full games. Washington's starting left tackle, Chris Samuels, who missed Sunday's loss to Kansas City, may be finished. The neck injury he sustained 11 days ago against the Panthers has only made a previous neck injury worse. If he requires surgery, it's doubtful he'll ever play again. Positive news for the Bengals, who lost their top sacker, Antwan Odom, to a ruptured Achilles tendon, will get DT Domata Peko back soon. An MRI showed only a mild sprain, so he should be back in the lineup after their bye week in time for a rematch with the Ravens, November 8th.
Wisconsin lost leading tackler, linebacker Mike Taylor. The redshirt freshman leads the Badgers with 45 tackles, but underwent season-ending knee surgery yesterday. Cincinnati quarterback, Tony Pike had surgery yesterday to reset a plate in his left arm that was placed there last season after breaking his arm. It's in his non-throwing arm, so he is expected to be back in the lineup soon.
The Big-12 quarterback injury report is extensive & pretty vague. Mizzou's Blaine Gabbert says he's a go on his sprained ankle, Texas QB Colt McCoy's jammed thumb is swollen, discolored & the nail is hanging on, but his range of motion is improved over yesterday. Texas Tech's Taylor Potts is practicing & is expected to be cleared by doctors so he may play Saturday versus Texas A&M. No word out of Lincoln as to who Bo Pelini plans to start at quarterback, Zac Lee or Cody Nelson. Oklahoma signal caller, Sam Bradford, who hasn't played a full half of football this season after twice injurying his throwing shoulder. He is supposed to answer questions from the media later today. I fully expect last season's Heisman Trophy winner to shut it down with season-ending shoulder surgery & then move on to the NFL next season.
The Denver Broncos, with their win on the road Monday night in San Diego, essentially won the AFC West. They lead San Diego & the Raiders by 3 1/2 games. If the Broncos go .500 the rest of the season, they win 11 games. San Diego or Oakland would have to win 9 of 11 to get to the same win total. Don't see that happening. For all their bluster & bravado, the Chargers laid an egg Monday night. They couldn't run the ball, L.T. looks like he's finished, they were unable to keep the rush off QB Phillip Rivers & their lack of discipline & intensity on kick coverage was disgraceful. Return specialist Eddie Royal ran back both a punt & kickoff for scores. Not only was he not touched, he never even broke stride. It was pathetic. Mike Nolan has taken what was an awful defense, plugged in 9 new starters & came up with not only an effective squad, but a defense that has only given up 3 second-half points all season. The other thing I'll say about the Broncos is, winning is contagious, it breeds more winning, Denver will be tough to stop in this division. Can they get by Pittsburgh or Indianapolis? We'll see, they've already won 2 games, New England & San Diego, I thought they'd lose.
Today's real name of the day: Malliciah Goodman, defensive end, Clemson.
