CUTLER STINKS, CINCY GOES TO 10-0 & WHY TEBOW DOESN'T FUMBLE
Bears' fans were ready to order playoff tickets the day after they traded for QB Jay Cutler. Now, not so much. Cutler threw 5 interceptions last night in Chicago's 10-6 loss to San Francisco. Honestly, one was because Devin Hester fell down on a route, but the others were bad decisions. Cutler now ranks 25th in the league with a passing rating of 76.0, which is behind even Matt Cassell & he trails Kyle Orton, who he was traded for, by over 12 points. Not good, his 17 interceptions projects out to over 30 picks. The Bears' running game is almost non-existant, ranking 26th in the league, this only makes Cutler's task much more difficult. So much for the playoffs.
Normally there are about 30-35 juniors & 3rd-year sophomores available for the NFL Draft every year. Without a new collective bargaining agreement for the 2011 season, it appears next season will be an uncapped year money-wise. The owners want to restore some sanity to the draft & it's aftermath by instituting a rookie wage scale, similar to the NBA. This is why you can expect at least twice as many underclassmen to come out in April. They don't want to run the risk of losing millions of 1st & 2nd round dollars. Every other round's money should be comparable to what it is right now, but many of these kids have an inflated opinion of themselves & their future in the draft. Part narcisism, part entourage sucking up & part agent ass kissing. So many of those who make themselves available next January, when they have to declare, won't go higher than the 4th or 5th round. But it will shove some of the better senior talent into the 2nd & 3rd rounds. This could be one of the best drafts ever.
Idaho State Athletic Director Rob Spear was going to Boise last week for a short meeting with his counterpart at Boise State. When Spear got to his departure gate at the Moscow airport he got one look at the plane & decided he wouldn't fly to Boise. The Horizon Air commuter jet was encased in a brand new color scheme, the orange & blue of Boise State, complete with the Bronco logo on the tail. Spear asked if he could leave later in the day on a non-Boise State commemerative aircraft. He was told by an airline official all their inner-Idaho aircraft looked like the one parked in front of the gate. Spear left in a huff, retrieved his car from the parking lot & drove to Pullman Washington were he was able to catch a flight on Horizon Air that didn't look like the Boise State team plane. He completed his meeting, flew back into Washington & then drove home to Moscow. Had he taken the original flight, it would have lasted a little over an hour. Driving into Washington & then flying to Boise more than doubled the trip's travel time. But at least he didn't have to fly on a plane encased in the the colors of the hated rivals of the Vandals, which they play later this afternon.
The Temple Owls won Friday night, burying Akron, 56-17. The Owls scored 35 unanswered 2nd half points to run their record to 8-2. In 1979, Temple finished 10-2, ranked 17th in the country, their best record & ranking in school history. It was also their last season that ended in a bowl appearance. With Kent State & Ohio left on the schedule, they have a chance to equal that plus play in the MAC Championship game & a bowl game giving the Owls the oppotunity to win 12 games. Coach Al Golden has brought this program back from being a laughingstock to being tied with Central Michigan for the best record in the Mid-American Conference.
The Cincinnati Bearcats ran their undefeated record to 10-0 tonight outlasting the West Virginia Mountaineers 24-21. Cincy was aided by the replay official when he reversed a goaline fumble by Bearcat runner Isiah Pead & instead called it a touchdown. I thought it was a touchdown after seeing the replay, I also thought Pead had lost control of the ball before it crossed the goaline. Cincinnati had fumbled in the 2nd quarter, their first lost fumble of the season, which is pretty amazing.
Speaking of fumbles, or more correctly the lack of them, Heisman winner, Tim Tebow, has quite a record of hanging onto the ball himself. In 1,484 touches of his glorious Gator career, he's only lost a fumble 3 times, that's once every 494.6 times he touches the ball. Absolutely amazing. I've never been able to understand how he can carry the ball so loosely with either hand & never fumble. He carries a football like a carton of eggs, without ever breaking one. What exercise does Tebow do to have such control? I saw a picture of Tebow & his girlfriend of 3 years, Amber, the other day & it hit me.
