HERZLICH HEALING, CLAUSEN HEADING FOR THE DRAFT & PETA CONTINUES TO AMAZE
Boston College linebacker, Mark Herzlich, has beaten a rare form of cancer known as Ewings Sarcoma. This cancer attach's to bones in the lower extremities & is often fatal. Herzlich, the 2008 Big-East defensive player of the year, was given the go-ahead by his oncologist to undergo surgery that would enable him to play football again. This past Monday, a steel rod was put into Herzlich's leg to add strength & support to his fibula. As soon as this heals, he can resume training for his return to the Eagles for his senior season. Before the cancer was detected in January, Herzlich was considered to be a 1st round draft pick, but now, he's just happy to be alive & have the opportunity to play football again.
Mike Shanahan had ab extended 7-hour meeting with Buffalo Bills Chief Operating Officer, Russ Brandon, Monday evening into early Tuesday morning. Shanahan publicly said he & Brandon "had a very good meeting & they would stay in touch." I think that means 'I'm not going to Buffalo until I see what else will be offered after the season is over'.
Embattled Cleveland Browns' coach, Eric Mangini, apologized for his remarks accusing Detroit Lions' players of faking injuries to slow down the Browns' no-huddle offense. He said he was frustrated at losing & that he & Detroit coach Jim Schwartz had "cleared the air" in a telephone call.
Jimmy Clausen's family, who moved to South Bend Indiana to be near their son while he played for Notre Dame, sold their house two days ago. A loose-lipped real estate agent spilled the family's business to someone in the press. That move would tell me he's not coming back to South Bend next year for his senior season, opting instead for the NFL Draft & what might be the last big payday for 1st round picks. A new collective bargaining agreement, now in the works, may contain a rookie salary cap structure similar to the one employed by the NBA. The move would restore some much needed sanity to the system. The top-10 picks of the first round require such a ridiculous financial commitment to young men who, too often, don't pan out & walk away with tens of millions of dollars for almost nothing.
I guess I have to read both newspapers from L.A. before I tell you USC's #1 receiver, Damien Williams won't play vs. UCLA on Saturday. His ankle sprain was still a problem, according to The Orange County Register but in today's edition of the L.A. Times, it was reported Williams practiced yesterday & was expected to play.
The Georgia Bulldogs mascot, UGA VII, passed away last week. The bulldog lived 9 very pampered years. The 'Dogs plan to replace UGA VII with UGA VIII very soon. For those of you who don't get the connection, UGA is an abbreviation for University of Georgia. Well now PETA has entered the selection process regarding Georgia's choice of a new mascot. A PETA spokesperson said yesterday "It's time to put an end to the cycle of suffering endured by dogs who are brought into the world solely to represent the school's brand." The animal rights organization wants Georgia to either utilize a robotic dog or a human being dressed up as a dog. A guy in a 30-pound dog costume in 90% humidity is definitely the better idea don't you think? Talk about "cycle of suffering". As a lifelong animal lover & per owner, I am continually baffled by this outfit.
I have no plays for Thanksgiving Day & the only one I'm considering for Friday is Nevada getting 14 at Boise State. I'll let you know Friday afternoon.
