NO MORE 58's FOR CHIEFS, A YANKEE TEACHES A JET & JOSH McDANIELS SAYS *#@&%!!!

Sunday in Arrowhead Stadium, the Kansas City Chiefs will officially retire #58 in honor of the late Derrick Thomas. The ceremony will be at halftime & is very deserving. Thomas, a longtime fan favorite, was one of the most honored Chiefs in franchise history. He won the Butkus Award as the best college linebacker in 1988. He was the #4 overall player selected in the 1989 NFL Draft. In 12 seasons in Kansas City, he made 9 Pro Bowls, he was the NFL defensive rookie of the year, he won the 1993 Walter Payton Man of the Year, to name a few of the accomplishments in Thomas' career. He set the all-time NFL record for sacks in a single game when he sacked Seattle QB Dave Kreig 7 times, a game I was lucky enough to attend. He was a very special player & I'm glad to see his number retired.

The Southern Methodist Mustangs are going bowling. SMU has accepted an invitation to the Hawaii Bowl on December 24th. Coach June Jones, in just his second season, has reversed the fortunes of this program, one that hasn't been to a bowl game since 1984. Jones returns to Hawaii, where he guided the Rainbow Warriors to a 2007 Sugar Bowl berth. The Warriors had been a .500 program before Jones arrived & were 75-41 under Jones, winning 2 conference championships & playing in 6 bowl games. In 2008, Jones' 1st season at SMU, the Mustangs were 0-8 in conference play. This season, they improved to 6-2 in Conference-USA play.

A Yankee teaching a Jet? Yes it's true, manager Joe Girardi of the World Champion New York Yankees, has been brought in to teach rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez how to slide. I've only seen his slide twice & it was awkward, apparently there have been more & coach Rex Ryan is worried about Sanchez getting injured sliding when running out of the pocket.

Post season honors are starting to come out & a few Missouri Tigers did well enough to be named to some All-Big-12 teams. WR Danario Alexander, LB Sean Weatherspoon & PK Grant Ressel were named to the 1st team Big-12's all-conference team as well as The Kansas City Star's all-conference team. Pass rushing terror, DE Aldon Smith, was named freshman newcomer of the year. QB Blaine Gabbert, OG Kurtis Gregory, Smith & DT Jaron Baston were named to the second team in one or both of the teams.

Going into the last weekend of college football regular season action, my Heisman finalists rank as follows:

1. Colt McCoy   QB  Texas  He can sew this up with a great performance vs. Nebraska in the Big-12 championship game Saturday night.

2. Toby Gerhart  RB  Stanford  His season is complete, but what a finish beating Oregon, USC & Notre Dame.

3. Mark Ingram  RB  Alabama A sub-par performance last week vs. Auburn hurt, plus he injured his hand. How he rebounds against Florida in the SEC Championship game will determine if he can catch McCoy.

4. Jeremiah Masoli  QB  Oregon  The Ducks have been carried down the stretch by Masoli & RB LaMichael James. The "Civil War" tomorrow night with bitter in-state rival, Oregon State, could elevate Masoli even more.

5. Case Keenum  QB  Houston  He leads the nation in every passing category that matters, but I think Heisman voters have memory of Andre Ware, another Houston QB who had a great year & was never heard from again.

The Philadelphia Eagles, already without RB Brian Westbrook, will not have game breaking wide receiver & punt returner, DeSean Jackson, for Sunday's game in Atlanta. Jackson admitted yesterday he was knocked unconscious last Sunday & is still feeling the effects of a concussion. Atlanta will be without QB Matt Ryan, sidelined with turf toe. A lot of firepower will not be available for this very important contest for both teams.

Denver coach Josh McDaniels has apologized for his outburst heard during the Thanksgiving night telecast of their game with the New York Giants. The sideline sound man for The NFL Network picked up McDaniels yelling at his offensive line "We're trying to win a mother*#%king game!!" Ahh, live TV, what better way to enjoy a holiday with the family than having that blasted out of the speakers on your big screen huh? Beautiful.
