SOME TEXAS BOWL FACTS & REMEMBER THOSE UNIFORMS MIZZOU WORE VS. KU?
A couple of facts I've found since the announcement of the Tigers' acceptance of a Texas Bowl bid. The Texas Bowl is only in it's 4th season, the game is played at Houston's Relliant Stadium, where the NFL Texans play. The game will be shown on ESPN, whereas the Insight Bowl is only televised on The NFL Network. Even tho the Insight Bowl didn't offer Mizzou a bid, Tiger A.D. Mike Alden claimed that was a consideration, greater exposure, nearly double on ESPN. What Alden didn't highlight until he was quizzed by the press Sunday night, was the disparity in money between the bowls. The traveling expense budget from the Insight Bowl is $1,350,000, but the Texas Bowl allows just $877,000. This might mean neither the band or the Spirit Squad will be able to make the trip on the Bowl committee's dime. The reason, the Big-12 isn't slotted like other conferences are, is they make more money allowing the bowl committees to choose whoever they want to invite. It used to be the bowl committee didn't have a choice, if they had a Big-12 contract, they were obligated to invite the "5th ranked Big-12 team" or the "7th ranked Big-12 team", whoever was slotted from the Big-12. This is why the Insight Bowl passed on Mizzou, they had Iowa State down there 9 years ago & they bought 20,000 tickets, they remember that stuff. Last year, the Gator Bowl passed on Mizzou & chose Nebraska, a team with a worse record than the Tigers & a team Mizzou had beaten. The year before the Orange Bowl selected KU while the higher ranked Tigers settled for the Cotton Bowl. O.K. so Gary Pinkel does a great job recruiting in Texas, 30 of his current players are from the Lone Star state, he happy to be going back again. He also mentioned he has no players from Arizona. So maybe a bowl trip out there might have generated some interest among high school players? Could be worse I guess, KU isn't going anywhere, they don't have a coach & most of their really good players are all leaving, so yes, I suppose it could be worse.
Did you like the Nike Combat Stealth uniforms the Tigers wore in the Border Showdown with Kansas? Nike paid the Missouri athletic department $100,000 to use them once on national television. They also let Mizzou keep the complete uniform for every player, helmet, jersey, pants, cleats & gloves. If you really liked what you saw, you can bid on them in an online auction the athletic department is currently conducting on their web site. Apparently, there are still a slew of rich Tiger fans out there willing to pony up big $$$ for these items. With more than a week to go in this auction, all of the helmets listed are all $850 or more, some are over $1,100. The jersey's are in the $500 range, cleats, $125 & gloves at about $125. No pants as of yet. Maybe they can use some of this booty to take the band to the bowl game.
