HARBAUGH SAYS NO, NFL $$$ TO MIZZOU & MY HEISMAN PICK

Despite intense speculation to the contrary, Jim Harbaugh isn't coming to KU. The Stanford coach, in New York to support his running back ,Toby Gerhart, a Heisman finalist, issued a statement 2 hours ago putting the rumors to rest. He stated he had recently signed an extension with Stanford & he would be staying in Palo Alto. I believed for some time, the only job he'd leave Stanford for would be his alma mater, Michigan. Rich Rodriguez certainly will be on the hot seat early on in 2010 if the Wolverines don't start well. This could lead to speculation about Harbaugh, speculation that I think is much more believable than 'Captain Comeback' going to Kansas.

It appears the betting public has little confidence in Boise State. The Fiesta Bowl opened last Sunday night with TCU being favored by 4 points. It has been bet up to 7 everywhere in Las Vegas. A 3-point move in the first 5 days is extraordinary. The pros will jump on Boise if the line moves further up to 7 1/2, possibly looking for a middle, 6 & 7 are common margins of victory, so if you have TCU -4 & Boise +7 1/2, you can win both bets. You can also push at -4 & win at +7 1/2, but you can't lose both bets, all you could lose is the vig. Many professional sports gamblers look for a good middle, the Fiesta Bowl could very well be that game.

Ever wonder where all that fine money in the NFL goes? Well some of it is going to the University of Missouri School of Medicine. The NFL recently handed out $1.5 million in fine money, all of it going towards medical research. Mizzou will receive $120,000 for the study of meniscus damage, a common knee injury not only for football players but everyday people of all ages. As someone who has had a torn meniscus that required arthroscopic surgery, I think it's a no-brainer, the more orthopedic surgeons know about the meniscus, the better.

The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats are leading at half 21-0, should have been 28-0 if not for a fumble right at the Grand Valley State goaline. The game features the best "decleating block " on a punt return I've seen all season, I promise it will be featured in ESPN's Top Ten Plays of the Day. It was awesome! My man LeRon Council, of Center High in Kansas City, has 2 of the scores on touchdown runs & 136 yards on 16 carries so far. One more thing about this game, ESPN's Pam Ward is calling the play-by-play & I have to say, she's better than many of her male counterparts. She's been calling college football for about 7 years I think & she's quite good. The hardest part of her play by play is getting past hearing a female's voice in the first place, which I did years ago. There are way too many awful play-by-play guys in college & the pros for women like Pam Ward to not get a shot.

My Heisman pick is Toby Gerhart of Stanford. I think Mark Ingram would have won except for his 30-yard game against Auburn in Alabama's final regular season game. One week later I thought it was Colt McCoy's to lose last weekend & he lost it. I never thought Tim Tebow had a shot, I expect him to finish 5th tonight. I said Gerhart was my Heisman pick, he's who I think will receive the award, not who I personally would vote for, Ndamakong Suh, unquestionably the best college football player this season. The Nebraska defensive tackle took games over all by himself, his performance against Texas was the clincher. Eleven tackles, 7 for loss, 2 passes knocked down & 4 1/2 sacks in spite of being game planned against by the Longhorns. This kid has Reggie White-like potential, he plays so hard, with such a high intensity level, he's something special to watch. Week after week, he was a marked man & yet he lead his team in tackles, almost unheard of for a DT.  Suh was college football's best & isn't that what the Heisman is supposed to be about?
